My habit is to replace the entire brake shoe/pad, and the process described before is accurate for me. That said, since my riding time gets split between multiple bikes, including indoor, I don't change rim brake pads very often. My #1 road bike was bought used in Dec '20. It still has the same brake pads that were on it when I bought it. When I put together my singlespeed MTB in June '21, I installed new v-brake pads. They haven't been replaced since. 2 orher bikes have disc brakes. The rim brake pads on the bike that lives on my trainer are probably close to 20 years old. They don't get much use - LOL.

The ridiculous part is that 50PlusCycling's comment had zero effect on smd4's opinion about disc brakes. He made up his mind about them long ago, and has made it clear that his opinion is unwavering.

What's ridiculous is that you think some anonymous stranger's comments on a message board about working on disc brakes would make my opinion "waver" (or anyone's for that matter). That's just being silly.

It seems to me the general consensus from the pro-disc folks is that the hassles of discs aren't actually as big as the anti-disk folks attempt to portray.

New information should change one's opinion? To one degree or another, yes .... depending on the quality of the information. Maybe it strengthens the opinion, or reverses it, or alters it in some other way ....

When the opinion is in no way based on fact, the Fact should indeed change the opinion .... otherwise the opinion is Invalid, as in, it does not correspond accurately to the actual world.

Some of us try to base our opinions in fact, and we are not afraid to change opinions when we learn more accurate information.

Blah blah blah.

My rim brakes work perfectly for me. FACT.

Please feel free to attempt to refute. Or, perhaps, change your opinion.

I have an ebike with hydraulics. All other bikes were cable brakes.

the ebike brakes work fine of course but I don’t think that they’re much better than cable. I have no idea how I will maintain them.

Based on the information you have provided, I have refined my opinion .... you resolutely and deliberately refuse to engage honestly on the topic at hand and are not worth further consideration at this time.

I will of course view further posts with an open mind.

Sorry for the late reply. I was busy reading the latest Larry Sellerz broken seatpost thread. It's delightful!

Anyway, what does that even mean..."engage honestly?" I'm being as honest as I can be. My rim brakes are awesome...so much so, that--while I have purchased Kool Stop pads--I really see no need to use them.

Your opinion is fixed and therefore immutable. So, you cannot possibly engage in an honest discussion. Just state your opinion and move on rather than hog the convo

Why are you guys so insistent that I change my opinion? Based on posts on an internet forum? That's just really weird. Like...almost cult-like.

How about reading my whole post?

We get your ill-informed perspective, now move on. In other words, stop with your drivel

My! Such anger!

All perfectly justified, of course, because someone said they like their rim brakes.

I read your whole post. Just didn't quote it. Which is allowed. Or is it? Who made you Forum Police?

You have added nothing but distraction to this thread. No anger, just letting you know your antics are annoying.

Used to hate them with a passion until I had them at a restaurant where they were deep fried so they were crispy, coated with tiny pieces of bacon, gorgonzola in a balsamic dressing. Utterly delicious. Order them every time now. Even I can change my opinion (no inadvertent reference to smd4 ).
