Lessons from the National Bike Summit

The League of American Bicyclists did an incredible job showing bike advocates what is possible around the nation with real, on-street demonstrations. If our communities implement these simple, low-cost paths, maybe we too can increase ridership among women by 20 percent and get 10 percent of all trips in the downtown core to be by bike. Includes interviews from Will Hansfield of DDOT, Leah Fantel of Upshift mobile bike shop, and Joel Gwads with an Intro to Alley Cat Racing who gets philosophical.
. What are your thoughts?

As I recall, a number of years ago the city of San Francisco saw a significant increase in cycling mode share - at the same time that there was a citywide moratorium on installing bicycle facilities due to CEQA litigation. So there may be opportunities that don't require infrastructure implementations.

Also, context matters. Placing a 2-way bikeway parallel and adjacent to a roadway can result in conflicts at intersections. Where the adjacent roadway has low speeds such as Montreal, there are many conflicts but very few collisions. In locations such as Flagstaff where the adjacent roadway is a typical suburban arterial, the result can be some of the highest bicycle crash locations in the state.
