Recumbent muscles different than upright? Does it matter?

They say the muscles used on recumbents are different. I'm wondering whether the difference would matter much? I was considering using a recumbent for the long slow stuff in polarized training.

Yes, it does. Is this a training question, or a trainer question?

I'd like to put a lot more time in on the trainer at Zone 2, but my butt can't handle all that time, so I'm considering using a recumbent.

Yes, IMO it matters a lot. According to 'bent riders, there's quite an adaptation going back and forth. The butt issue is easily solvable. I do 2 hour Z2 polarized sessions on my rollers, though I think that'd bore me to death on a trainer. Butt is not an issue. One needs the right saddle, the right shorts, the right bike fit, and the right attitude. OTOH if you're talking about a spin bike type of thing rather than your own well-fitted road bike sitting on a trainer, that's a whole 'nother story, probably one without a good answer.
