New Wheelset Thoughts

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nothing wrong with the Camry. Out of all the cars I’ve had, only one has been a Toyota, and that was my very first car.

Question on another wheelset and I may as well ask here. My current road wheelset uses Easton EA90 SL rims. They are 27mm deep. If I move to 40mm deep rims like the Zipp 303 Firecrest Clincher RIM brake wheelset, will the aero benefit be noticeable on flats and long/steep downhills?

I ask because I had older DT 411s (21mm depth) and when I moved to ENVE 3.4 SESs several years ago (that bike is sold) I felt like I gained some speed on flats and downhills but I forget my observations at the time.

With 3k budgeted I'd probably buy two pairs of merely only sort of fancy but not Grey Poupon wheelsets, and a poverty Oliver Twist cheapo set for bad weather.

I think you'd notice the difference. 303s are certainly not slow wheels.

Well, these types of posts always cost me money. I just ordered the ZIPP 303 Firecrest rim brake wheelset. It will be a while (June) so that gives me enough time to regret my poor financial decision and look forward to the fun times on the wheelset, as well as gaining a couple of MPH on my favorite downhills like Vail Pass and Loveland Pass.
