Suppose you have a pair of bike shoes you like. Is there any reason to have more than one pair? (Rotation?)

Cycling shoes are not cheap to be doing that IMO.

I have 3 pairs that are nice to have. One is an old pair that is dedicated to the trainer since I sweat all over them. The other 2 are for riding and always good to have two so that if you get one real wet or need to replace a cleat there is a backup.

Not really for rotation but really for vanity. I have a pair of black and a pair of white shoes that I will choose based on the kit for the day.

I have a pair with 3 bolt holes and a pair with 2. I also have a really nice shoe/boot/glove dryer that produces ozone to kill microbes that my shoes go on immediately after rides. If I didn't have that, I might consider a back up pair.

This. I'm on my 3rd pair of S-Works. They're expensive, but they fit my feet perfectly. The newest ones are my A shoes, the previous pair are my B shoes, and the oldest are my trainer shoes. They've got a little rust, and one of the Boas is broken, but who cares.

I've got two pairs with SPD cleats. I used to own just a single nice set for long rides, but then a few years back I took a job where I was taking the bike on transit in the middle of my commute. After nearly slipping several times carrying a bike up or down stairs and onto a train, I bought a second pair that are more like sneakers with cleats. They don't have as stiff a sole but they're great for commuting.

My shoes weren't super expensive (Venzo) but they fit me well and are very comfortable.
My old bike, which is used almost exclusively on a trainer with Zwift now, has SPD-SL pedals. On my new bike, I went with Wahoo Speedplays. It was cheaper to get new shoes than new pedals. My black shoes are SPD-SL, my white shoes are Speedplays.

I just ordered a pair of Adidas Velosambas, mainly because I saw them and I wanted them (not usually an impulse buyer). Will be good for shorter rides, or any ride where I may expect to walk around a bit on the other end (likely in street clothes). Have standard SPD road shoes, too. Wanted to get a pair of white Pearl Izumi Tours (vanity only), but nobody has my size...

As said above, road bike with 3-hole shoes, + off-road/grave/commuter bike with 2-hole shoes, plus a pair of runners that you sometimes use on bike rides.

When you get back from a rain ride, stuff the shoes with newspaper, and store them in a warm, dry place indoors (not ON a radiator, but close to one would work). They should be fine for the morning.

Besides the practicality of having an SPD pair for gravel, a trainer pair, and two regular road pair, I kind of have a problem with a never ending shoe shopping addiction. I don't buy repeatedly, but I am always looking. Same for helmets.

I have a pair that are for the road, a pair that are for my cross bike and an old pair set up for our indoor spin bike (shimano cleats rather than Frogs or Zeros).

1. Rain
2. Larger size for very long rides
3. Different pedal systems on different bikes
4. White shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day
5. Touring vs racing shoes

Yes. many reasons. Whether those reasons justify the expense is a purely personal question. Why do you ask? Does it matter what we think?

I have two because my first ones technically are a tad too large and are entry level and I wanted something more premium and better fitting. I still use the old ones on indoor training and will use them in bad weather (they are black, new ones white).

But when I just had one pair, I certainly didn't need a second one. Although I tend to avoid riding in the rain.

Which raises a question, in my mind at least. Does every GC contender's team (and sprinter's team, for early in the race) have a pair of shoes matching the Maillot Jaune, just in case they're lucky enough to wear it?

And if they have yellow shoes that are never worn, do they get rid of them after the tour? I can't imagine a top level team keeping last year's shoes around for next year's race...

Same here - two pair, three hole cleats for the road, two hole cleats for the gravel bike and occasional MTB. Also, when I'm traveling and take or rent a road bike, i use the two hole shoes and pedals because they're much more walkable and that tends to be a little more important when I'm on vacation riding who knows where

I also use a boot dryer almost every time I use the shoes (as well as my XC ski boots) because of sweat, but of course, every time if they get wet. No need for a backup pair because they always dry within a few hours. As for the possibility of a broken cleat. It's a good point, but my back up would be to just switch the pedals to match the shoes I have in service.... but I also have spare cleats so I could just replace a cleat pretty quickly if need-be. I also have flat pedals I could throw on a bike.

When my current road shoes and/or three sets of pedals wear out, I'll switch all my bikes to pedals that fit the two hole cleats. I like the road shoes and cleats (Sidi Genius/Time RXS) but I feel just as comfortable riding with my other shoes (Sidi Dominator/SPD type cleats). Problem is the Sidi shoes last FOREVER, especially since I keep the insides clean and dry.

I have three pairs. One that are for daily/regular use. One that have less venting that I use during the cooler months. And a beater pair that I wear in the spin studio.

It's nice to have a back up pair. Things break and wear out. I've broken buckles, velcro loops, BOAs, torn shoes and even cracked soles.

I think a lot of people just keep an older pair as a back up.
