Best routes in Newport/Huntington Beach area?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best routes in Newport/Huntington Beach area?

I'll be staying on the beach in this area sometime in the near future. I'm totally unfamiliar with it. I'm taking my bike and want to have the best possible riding experiences. Can anyone recommend routes? I'm thinking 20 to 70 milers.

Shorter rides around Newport Beach's Back Bay and up San Diego Creek trail. Ride as long as you want along PCH keeping in mind that where ever you hit a town traffic will be pretty bad and bike lanes can disappear. Pelican Hill has some steep hill climbs for intervals.

I bet google will give you as good an answer as any.

PCH, the Newport Back Bay, Laguna Canyon Road (133), Alton (in Irvine), Shady Canyon up and over Newport Coast back to PCH. (Try to keep a straight face when the locals refer to Newport Coast as "a killer climb.") Have fun!

You can also ride SART all the way out, it's about 28 miles one way and pretty flat. If you time your ride correctly you may appear in Mr. Beanz Journal!

Great stuff. Thanks for the input!

I am used to some pretty good canyon climbs so I'd opt for difficulty over traffic for sure especially if there's good scenery. I may even be able to get dropped somewhere 50+ miles out that I could ride back to the beach if that opens up any other options.
