What's your favorite cloth tape?

I'm going to get new bars, therefore... I want to try cloth tape. My bars are going to be wide and double wrapped - old soft handlebar tape on the inside, cloth tape on the outside.

What's your favorite cloth tape?

Well…my favorite is cloth wrap tape I’ve made myself. I’ve done it a few times. I’ll go to the fabric store and get a few yards of some material with a particular color and/or patten that I like. Cut it into long 2” strips, fold it in half, and then wrap the bars with that. Works well for me and looked good complementing the color of the bike.

I fiddle around getting the tape just right and find I don't need or want the adhesive so I use Herringbone Cotton Twill Tape (which is what Newbaums is I believe) in 30' rolls available everywhere and much less expensive. The pale tape shown below on the right with shellacing turns a golden color that matches my leather saddles well. Picture below has many many miles on it and will get a cleaning and shellac touch up soon.

My wife turned me on to bias tape, used in sewing. It's basically cloth bar tape without glue. We bought 50 yd rolls of both black and kinda like a cream colour on Amazon for like $10-$15 each. It comes in different widths and I think you can dye it any colour.. John

Newbaum's makes a padded tape that might negate the need to double-wrap. It's pretty cushiony.

I like your tape application. I will try it on my old vintage bike, it has a Brooks saddle and this will go nicely with the brooks.

This is a really interesting idea Dan! Do you have any pics you could share?

Unfortunately right now I’m not running this DIY tape on any of my bikes but I wouldn’t hesitate to. But it’s really easy. Just get the fabric you want to use and cut it into long, narrow strips…about 2” wide so that you can fold it over and get a good clean edge on the side that’s exposed. The length you’ll need is probably 6-ish feet per each side of the handlebar. Wrap it tight, and overlap enough so that the rough cut edge is not exposed.

Haven't wrapped bars with it, but I've been using hockey tape for hammer, clamp handles.

Inexpensive, works well, easy to double layer, even colors 'tho I only have black.

Should work well for your set up.

I use friction tape - what used to be known as electrical tape before vinyl took over. It's very thin, and with arthritis in the thumbs, I don't want the bars any fatter than necessary.
