Pump-Peg Extender(s)?

If you have brazed-on pump pegs, and a frame pump that is a little too short, is there a tidy way to place something on either the peg or the pump that will fasten the pump securely? I am looking at a pump that is 19", and my pump-pegs are 19" apart, so I actually need a 20" pump (un-compressed).

A Campagnolo umbrella clip was what I've used in the past. Zefal made something similar.

Come on man! Buy a bike with a 20 inch pump -- for the pump.

If you were using a Zefal HPX, I would just 3D print a longer tab to replace the stock tab

Only tangentially related, but timely. Got my Mooney back from paint, built it up and wanted to go for a ride. The pump! It had sported a Zephal HP from day one, later an HPX using the same umbrella clip. (I opted out of a headtube peg because money post-head injury was very tight and my HPs were all sized for the umbrella clips.)

But where was that clip? (Took it off in December; a long time ago!) No luck. No other clips or pegs turned up. (My other bikes have been getting pegged when they do to the framebuilder for whatever but I forgot this time when the Mooney went for seat lug resto, moved RD housing stop and under the DT waterbottle bosses.) So I fitted an HPX, nestling the head which I long ago wrapped in innertube to quiet it on rough roads and be kind to pump peg paint against the bottom of the head tube lug, then wrapped a pump velcro around the handle. And hurray! Secure plus it dampens the internal rattle of all HPXs I had in recent years; sounding like a loose headset on rough roads. I always use those velcro straps anyway so this is zero extra work, just a different location.

It sounds like it is close, Is it possible to disassemble the pump to place a spacer between the spring and the pump body? You could also stretch the spring so that it has a longer free height and this might be enough to do it.

What does the pump look like? Does the pump fit into a Schrader valve fitting? Perhaps you can get a Schrader valve off an old tube and thread it into the valve fitting, then cut the valve to the correct size.

Is the pump special? Can a Zefal HP be used? You can make it more vintage looking by removing the paint. It is a lot of work though.

If I’m taking along a frame pump and it doesn’t precisely fit, I use some Velcro tape to hold it in place. My pocket mini pump is still on its way back home from Eroica so I even used the technique on my plastic bike without pump pegs.

Those are good ideas. Since the pump is presta, I think I will try doing what you said and inserting a spare presta valve into the fitting (I might have to extract the needle valve in it). To answer your question, yes, it is going on the Barnard, and is the right color and possibly even close to being period-correct. It's a Bluemels Tour De France.

So the hose is inserted in the handle correct? Put a 1" sleeve over the hose. Metal, nylon, whatever to extend the length an inch.

Erm, is this confirmation that I'm not the only one who has done this? Or was that a trap to get me to confess?

That won't quite work. The hose will have an internal metal-barbed end with an olive-shaped outer bit that makes the hose fit snugly in the barrel; if you draw it out and put a sleeve on it it'll likely bend where the now otherwise unsupported rubber enters the handle.

An extension to the outlet would be my way - it's flat enough that a bit of round polythene and a suitably threaded bit though the middle would do.

I had tried taking the hose out of the handle and sliding metal washers onto it, behind the hose-head fitting, to extend it a bit, but one good bump and the arrangement collapsed, sending the celluloid pump under my rear tire, so not sure about putting plastic piece there. Maybe if I cut it long enough to give strong resistance.
