"seeing him casually pedal off in front of me, something told me he only looked fast and his gear wasn't a reflection of his strength as a rider."

Black is also the color of the funeral hearse that will carry you off after you get creamed 'cause the driver couldn't see you.

Long ago...and as a kid-on-a-slim-budget...I purchased based strictly on the wallet. As it became obvious that my 'thing' was cycling...and with the decades of improved economic status...I took [and take] some care to match everything up. It's become part of my overall enjoyment. I've found it's not all that hard to develop a "palette". [I got that term from the sexy gals in my life who talk like that viv-a-vis their wardrobe.]
My particular "palette" is red. That means that when I buy gear I look to all the colors that synch-up with red...red, white, black, all metals. Add to that a tiny spot of yellow in the Italian tri-color [family stuff] or a tiny spot of blue in the French [more family stuff] e voila...a theme! I'll add that most purchases can be synched-up with one basic "pallette" color. [Dunno' about that Bianchi blue-green paint, but even THAT has a kind of dramatic panache.]
OK...silly, no?.
That said, it much increases my enjoyment of getting out there on two wheels every other day. PLUS...[as a 50+ bike forum sort of fellow]...if "somebody's grandmother" gives me a smile as she passes by in her Corrolla, well that's OK, too.
Interesting it is that cycling encompasses a great number of realms, not the least of which is...as you fellows say...lookin' good!!!
Ciao!

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
My commuting jacket is the ubiquitous yellow that most people use.
My road jersey is a silver grey which just happened to be a good match and when I ride the antiques I have a lot of wool and tweed in complementing browns and greens.

I have a black and white bike everything matches it and a blue and white bike, almost everything matches it as well. I feel like more of a dork when I realize I am ultra color coordinated like white jersey, black shorts and white and black shoes with the white helmet, but I soon get over it once out on the road. I loves to spends my monies on my cycling clothes.

I've been riding an '81 Del Rey. A dinged-up, rusty, POS.
And yes, my clothes match it quite well.

Before seeing this thread today, I have never given any thought to whether my bike clothes match my bikes. I wear whatever's clean, and have so far refused to wear day-glo yellow, red, green, etc.

Nothing I wear matches my main ride -- it's Ti.
This is the only thing I have that goes with my #2 bike -- 2011 Specialized Tarmac. But it really doesn't match because the bike is black and white.

No colour matching, but it's all about style anyway. I think I look pretty "together" when I'm bombing around on my old-school mixte, with a pin-stripe skirt and bright top. I can't even imaging how silly I would look riding that with a full matching lycra kit. Now I'm picturing an areo helmet too, since I'm letting my imagination run wild, ha.
When I'm going to work it's just shorts or whatever, I don't ride to impress other roadies. I just want to get where I'm going and look good/appropriate when I arrive.

White Helmet - Easiest to see at all times of the day.
Yellow Jersey - Easiest to see in all weather conditions and almost all times of the day.
Red Long Sleeved Under-Jersey - A nice, look at me/pay attention, color to go up there with the red.
(generally I go with whatever I can find. If I get choices, I pick safety colors)
I do plan to powdercoat my frame yellow. Does that count?

Today we rode our blue tandem and I wore ... pink base layer jersey, pink jersey, blue merino jacket, pink windbreaker ... and a blue rain jacket just in case. Plus my blue helmet and blue gloves, and my socks had a blue band around the top.
And Rowan and I rode one of our fastest centuries in a while. Maybe the matching clothing worked! Match the clothing ... ride faster!!

All the reason to get only two colors for the bike and helmet: black or white. The rest will match, even somewhat.

If that's not flamboyant then I'm not having dinner with you that for sure!
