Five bikes for sale: Dawes, Raleigh, Miyata, Peugeot, Gitane
Five bikes for sale: Dawes, Raleigh, Miyata, Peugeot, Gitane
Edit: Peugeot is sold, others still available
I have five more bikes than I need, and have been procrastinating for years about finally moving them on. But the time has come. Being naturally lazy and not wanting to spend a lot of time taking photos and posting them, for now I'm just going to provide brief descriptions. If you're interested in a specific bike, respond here and I'll post some pictures. None of these bikes are garage queens. All have been ridden a lot, but have been well and carefully maintained. No dents, no frame damage. Except in one case, I'm selling the bikes without their saddles, but other than that I'm refraining from "parts harvesting." Prices don't include actual shipping via Bikeflights, or whatever a purchaser might prefer. But I'd much prefer to avoid boxing and shipping, and would consider driving halfway to meet a purchaser in the New England area.
It's really time to sell these bikes, so if you're interested but a price seems too high, send me a PM and possibly we can work something out. And if any of the prices I've listed strike anyone as too low, I'm willing to accept more.
1) 25" Dawes Double Blue, circa 1967. Paint is rough in places. All original except for front and rear derailleurs, freewheel, shifters, and rims. Included is a nearly NOS Wright's W3N saddle, which was NOS when I installed it a couple of years ago--it's a direct replacement for the dried-out original. $150
2) 25" Raleigh Gran Sport, circa 1976. Paint and chrome are sound, but with a typical level of wear for the year. Suntour barcons, Red Clover Components triplizer on Stronglight 93 crank, wide-range half-step-and-granny gearing. $175
3) 63 cm Miyata 1000, 1981. Non-original paint in generally good condition, but with a few scrapes. Originally had 27" wheels, but I rebuilt them several years ago with 700C Sun CR-18s. I rode this bike from California to Florida on the ACA Southern Tier route in 2017. Buy it and take it on another cross-country tour. $200
4) 63 cm Peugeot PX-10, 1972. This bike came to me as a frame and for in a trade with another BF member. Plain lugs, Reynolds decal on down tube. I built it up with correct PX-10 parts, save for handlebars and Technomic stem and Simplex SLJ derailleurs. Rear derailleur is the almost-impossible-to-find long-cage model--not quite worth its weight in gold, but probably worth more than the frame. Red Clover Components triplizer, wide-range half-step-and-granny gearing. $300
5) 63 cm Gitane Tour de France, circa 1973. Paint is faded along top tube and has plentiful chips and scratches. Chrome, however, is excellent. Mostly original, with these exceptions: Suntour barcons, tubular rims replaced with Mavic Open Sport clinchers, Technomic stem and Nitto bars, long-cage Simplex SX-610 RD and all-metal Simplex FD of unknown model. Like the Peugeot above, the Model 93 crank has been fitted with a Red Clover Components triplizer. A great-riding bike. $200

Dang, they are all too tall for me. However, while looking through some of your old posts, I found your post about the rig to soak frames for rust removal. I'll have to try that on a couple that I have.

Campy Nouvo Tipo high-flange hubs, 700c clincher rims with no branding on them that I can see, but good quality. With a very low-mileage set of Compass tires mounted on them, if that matters.

Miyata 1000 photos
Here are some photos of the Miyata 1000. It's now set up for an off-road tour I did last summer--those are 38mm Paselas, which fit with adequate clearance but no room for fenders. Custom 14-38 freewheel, with a Suntour AG rear derailleur--a stump-pulling 28-38 low gear. I included a couple of photos intended to show a couple of "touring scrapes." I said I would not be harvesting any parts, but now that I think about it, I am going to keep that front rack.
Also, see that stick of firewood standing vertically, just behind the rear derailleur in the first photo? It's from an old sugar maple--that hole in the side is where it was drilled for a tap.

Here are photos of the Gitane, positioned against the east side of my house for the afternoon light. Saddle and spd pedals are not included.
Note the areas of paint loss on the top tube. I put a little primer on the bare spots to prevent rust. Patina! No need to obsess about keeping the finish pristine! Bottom bracket is a newish Velo Orange french-thread cartridge. This has become my go-to for adding a triplizer to Model 93 cranks, given the difficult of finding triple-length French spindles for cup-and-cone bottom brackets. Integral Simplex derailleur hanger unbutchered, hence the direct-mount Simplex RD. I

Here are photos of the Dawes. As noted, this saddle stays with the bike. It was hard to find, it's in great shape and not even broken in, so it seems like a shame to split them up.
I'll do the Peugeot and the Raleigh tomorrow.

No, it won't be tomorrow here until midnight. And even then it will take me a little while.
But I will have photos up before noon tomorrow.

Here are the Gran Sport photos. I was mistaken earlier when I said that the crankset was a triplized Model 93. It's actually a Stronglight 99 double, with 46-32 rings. The condition of the paint speaks for itself--it's basically the condition it was in when the bike came to me. Notice that there's some paint loss on the fork leg, where the paint tends not to stick well to polished chrome. No frame dents or damage. Wheels are original, Normandy Sport hubs and "dimpled" Weinman 27" rims. I rebuilt the wheels with new but vintage galvanized spokes a few years ago.
Peugeot PX-10 photos to follow shortly.

Last bike--Peugeot PX-10. Photos are self-explanatory except for the crazy rear brake cabling, which as you can see includes a cable splitter and some extra clamps near the front of the top tube. I set this up two years ago when I was planning to attend Eroica California, just before the pandemic erupted (I think I sent them my vendor fee on March 9, about 12 hours before everyone in America, including me, realized they would not be going anywhere for quite a while. D'oh!) Anyway, the idea was to make it easier to break the bike down for air travel. Easily reversed, obviously, and under my no-parts-harvesting policy, the buyer gets to keep the cable splitter. How cool is that? A $10 value, or something! Again, the saddle does not go with the bike, although the pedals do.
Tires are Compass Stampede Pass 700x32. They fit with adequate clearance, but probably no room for fenders. Rear tire has to be deflated to provide clearance to remove or replace the wheel.

The Dawes looks cool. I rebuilt a similar one last year in red, but it was way too small for me. Problem is I am in Phoenix so I assume shipping would be more than the cost of the bike?

These bikes are reasonably priced if they were stock - with Jon's triplizer and the targeted upgrades, they are a deal. If I needed a hole in my head, I’d be purchasing one or two..

Unfortunately, in the case of the Dawes, that's pretty much the case. Bikeflights says it would be $156 to ship from Montpelier, Vermont to Phoenix.

Thanks, I'll give it some thought. I might be in Vermont for a reunion in early summer, so I will bookmark this thread.

Giving this thread a bump to note that the Peugeot has been sold.
