30 miles around Irvine. Started at Vista Point at Newport Back Bay, then found our way to Portola and to the Great Park for lunch. Then Shady Canyon Trail to UCI and took a tour of the campus (sort of) and then back to Newport. Casual but fun.

Thursday night leg thrashing. Add bunch of parts to the diverge before the ride so was a good shake down. Spesh roubaix 32c tires setup wider on gravel wheelset, Roval Terra carbon seatpost, S-works 110mm stem (replace the stock 90mm) and fizik saddle.

I often ride those two trails but always separately. Do you have any suggestion on how to get from the end of the Shady Canyon Trail (near farmers' market) to the start of the Mountains to the Sea Trail (at Vista Point)? I only ride the Shady Canyon Trail southbound so that the big climb (for me) is near the beginning; in the reverse direction, that becomes a bumpy white-knuckled descent.

We took Shady Canyon Drive south until Bonita Canyon / Culver Drive and then took Anteater Drive up to UCI and meandered through the Campus. On the west side of the campus we took Academy Way, Crossed University Dr to the San Diego Creek trail and then South until you're at Vista Point. There are several different routes through UCI.

Another 50 miler down PCH to Crystal Cove. Early morning PCH was a breeze. Going through Newport on an early weekend morning is a lot different that doing in rush hour traffic! Just as a warning, I think the Huntington Beach Surf festival is going to be starting up soon so watch out for all the crazies on those weekends.

Saturday ride from Mira Mesa up to Escondido vis Del Dios, too much glass n crap, we got two flat, and my sealant failed to work right....Went to Bike Bling to re-stock up on tubes since the route only had us a few blocks away. https://www.strava.com/activities/7555453738

Sunday's route from base of Torrey Pines snaked though rancho santa fe side streets and spit us off on the 101. Was a Pizza Port kinda day, big group 20+. No flats today, still have a "touring" tube in the rear to slow me down a lil. https://www.strava.com/activities/7561305969

Got lost with some friends in LA trying to find the Hollywood sign. You're definitely lost if one of the guys tells you to turn right 3 times in a row.

Sat. climbed all over the Anaheim/YL hills area. Sun. rode with my wife out Santiago Cyn Road. Instead of circling around through Lake Forest we turned around at the Gertner Rd. summit and headed back the opposite side. Muggy but the cloud cover held off the heat.
Ready for the Tour de Big Bear this coming weekend hopefully the monsoons will hold off!

Saturday - MTB ride up Sullivan Ridge fire road to Dirt Mullholland, Bent Arrow singletrack loop, return down Sullivan Ridge and Old Stables trails (21mi / 2800'). My riding buddy is quite a bit fitter than I am, and I was pushing myself fairly hard on all of the climbing. Hard overall effort for me, but definitely what I need right now.

Sunday - Group road ride - So Pasadena, Arcadia, Duarte, Sierra Madre (38mi / 1500'). Easy pace early, ramping up to some hard efforts in the second half. I felt pretty spent from Saturday's ride, and was able to hang with the strongest guys until the last couple of miles when I went empty and soft-pedalled to the coffee stop. Another stretch of my current fitness.

Metric Century on a Fixie.

End of the line. Too much hill.
Due to circumstances beyond my control the fixed gear is the only bike I currently have. Been sticking to river trails and did SART from end to end and back. Actually Anaheim Metrolink to Corona, then to Huntington Beach and back. I'm old and slow, and today is a recovery day.

Nothing blocking this trail. I did see a closure on SGRT in Bellflower a couple of weeks ago. That will be going on for months. I talked to one of the construction workers. They're burying a pressurized sewer line perpendicular to the stream. Banks on both sides getting trenched across.

Recovery

Monday's metric century on a fixed gear along SGRT was in preparation for a full century, but I have decided to add a freewheel for that. Gonna have to do some mods to the bike. I would have to add a rear brake, and replace the Velocity rims with ones that can take a rim brake. Discs? May be possible on the rear, but not the front. Today's felt good.

started at the las pulgas/5 fwy parking area again just east of the freeway. handy dandy when you don't feel like going through the base. it's just over 10 very flattish miles from there to the edge of there to the cristianitos rd on/offramps that mark the southern end of san clemente and
the return of vehicular traffic...so 20 miles rt of low low low/non-existent car interface. makes for a nice warmup/cooldown. little foray into the southern
part of orange county. sun rarely out but with high overcast, a tad muggy. san clemente just might be the e-bike capital of the world.

Thursday extra credit after work. First time back on the pinarello after riding the diverge for 2 weeks as weight and non aero handicap. This bike is like cheating in the wind at speed. doesn't climb as well as the diverge's lower gearing though. https://www.strava.com/activities/7584691392

northern san diego semi-coastal soirée: escondido, harmony grove, questhaven, double peak, san marcos, bressi ranch,
c-bad, la costa, encinitas, olivenhain, rancho santa fe and del dios areas. low-mid-80's, fairly humid by sd/socal standards.
only saw a handful of cyclists out and about but didn't actually hit the coast highway/cyclist freeway. questhaven dirt was a little "soupier"
than last visit but still fun and quiet. yearly visit to bressi ranch pizza port crossed off the to-do list. double peak park brutal as always but worth it.
pinch flat on the bridge heading into rancho santa fe but otherwise, a nice day out. half of harmony grove road with freshie pavé = awesome.

Wife & I had another great weekend in the mountains at the Tour de Big Bear. A little drizzly Fri. am but cleared out by mid-morning. Rode the Fri afternoon Poker Run for a warm-up.
Woke Sat morning to crisp & clear skies. Temps in the low 60s to mid 70s throughout the ride- mild winds (which clocked favorably) and NO RAIN. We parted ways after the Baldwin loop wife rode the 50 miler while I headed up 38 to Onyx summit for the 70 miler. Legs felt good and it was much cooler than last year. Heading up Division for the last few kickers I felt pretty strong maybe it was all the pickle juice I drank at the SAGs or the 1500' less elevation. The roads were surprisingly clear very little storm debris.
Although we rode pretty much the same roads as always they're really nice roads felt kinda like visiting old friends.
Can't wait for next year.
