Saturday Dirt Therapy...Sullivan Ridge Rd - Farmers Ridge/Bent Arrow singletrack - Dirt Mullholland to The Hub - Backbone Trail to Will Rogers Park. Longest MTB ride in a very long time, and my buddy was pushing the limits of my fitness on every climb. Totally empty at the end, but it was fantastic.

Looking over Santa Monica Bay from Backbone Trail

Sunday - Easy road spin through La Canada, Pasadena, So Pasadena with a few mild efforts. Legs were heavy and dead - no surprise. Trying to stay on shaded streets as much as possible (21 mi, 1000')

quickie visit up to oc to hit the 1984 olympic road race course in mission viejo along with live oak canyon/trabuco canyon.
mixed in a little el toro paved trail up to cook's corner. in the low 90's but that's what happens when you start late. pavé
excellent on the ascent of live oak canyon (from cook's corner) and on the descent down to trabuco canyon. prefer heading
south when it's hot and north when it's not on that particular road.

bike trail pics are the northern end of the aliso creek bikeway aka informally as the el toro rd path. from the northern end
at cook's corner (i-section of live oak canyon rd and santiago canyon rd/el toro rd), it goes almost all the way to the 5 freeway
before jotting onto los alisos blvd briefly and then continuing on-roughly paralleling alicia pkwy-and eventually dead-ending in
aliso/wood canyon. great way to head n/s through that bottom part of orange county and minimizing traffic interface. plenty of places to
jump on/off. el toro rd on the north side of the 5 fwy is pretty busy for the first few miles/last few miles close to the freeway but opens up
the farther north you go. those last 3 miles of the northern end of the trail are great to have but not essential because el toro rd is
pretty wide through that stretch.

Did my first "real" ride on my new Canyon Endurace. 27 miles down to the Queen Mary.

The bike had some problems out of the box and Canyon customer service had to order a few parts, then I had to sit around and wait for them, and then get them installed. For the record the problem was with a Shimano Caliper. The bleed screw would not seal and brake fluid just kept dripping out.

I did the ride on the stock Goodyear 30mm tubeless tires with tubes (came that way) and the rolling resistance was less than optimal, those are huge in my book. I ordered some Conti 5000s 25mm clinchers and I will be installing them today in prep for a real ride tomorrow.

I won't bore you with the details but this bike is so much more comfortable than my other ride (2002 Trek 5200). I'm more upright and the touchpoints just feel "right".

(I've posted this pic already but I just don't get tired of showing off. I'm still in the honeymoon stage with it)

Today was one of those days I regretted climbing the mountains today because it was so damn hot, but I already committed and needed to finish to completion!

Good thing you're carrying a lot of water. I'm going through so much water on these hot days. Along my routes I have several places I can replenish the water so I'm only carrying 1 bottle.

64-miler that turned into a taco ride along with hitting border field state park (only open on the weekends), lemon grove, spring valley, la mesa, bonita, chula vista,
san ysidro, national city and the metro sd area. muggy with hazy sunshine all day. some newish pavement down by the border on hollister st
(stables area) and monument rd (last stretch before the state park). worst parts got redone and makes a huge difference.

Rode from home to the MIL's to spend time with the family at the pool. The bike and I got nasty coming out of Corona due to some dirty water running down Smith Dr.

It was a good ride; first time going through Santiago Canyon. One of my joys of riding is exploring and finding new areas. I didn't check the route profile closely after mapping it out, so I didn't expect much of a challenge outside of some rollers. So I was a bit surprised to be presented with a 2.0 mile climb at 10% gradient on Serrano Ave after turning in from Weir Canyon.

it's gonna be 109 out here today in the coachella valley. once it gets above 95 or so, any cooling/wind effect from moving 15+ mph is negated
plus the asphalt below heats up to like 130+.

It's way too hot to be riding inland at all. I've been doing nothing but going up and down PCH. This Friday I think we're going to try a little Irvine/Great Park/Newport (but we're starting at about 07:30).

Left the house at 0730, back before 1100 and it was 90F on the shaded patio.
35 miles and 3.7K of climb in the Whittier Hills along the East-West Rd corridors and Turnbull Cyn.

Learned my lesson last year that heat exhaustion can come on suddenly and if caught without shade and cool water, heat stroke and an ER visit will follow.

Little known fact..."Coachella" is an ancient native word meaning "it's really hot here".

There's an old "Far Side" in which an old Lone Ranger is sitting in his rocking chair and reads that the meaning of "Kemo sabe" is "horse's ass" or something like that. :-)

Metrolink Ride to LA

I lived in the San Fernando Valley from '95-'03 and decided to ride up for a ride down memory lane. Really slow due to oogling and picture taking. Turned into a good mental adjustment ride.

Ride was closer to 50 mi. but some old fart forgot to start Strava when he got off the Red Line.

I did 40 miles yesterday riding the LA River Bike Path to train my cadence and speed and then did double climb duty up the Griffith Observatory. My ride was extra painful, because I did a heavy barbell squat session the day before. Plus on one segment of the climb, someone was sprinting up behind me trying to reach me, so I upp'ed my pace to the top checkpoint putting a good 45 second gap between us, but by doing so I pretty much emptied my tank. I ended up climbing slower than usual!

I'm also in the process of building a climb specific bike. My current bike frame is as light as it can get, so once I get the new frame, I'll do a parts swap and keep the other frame as backup or build another bike with it!

east county san diego 57-miler. was expecting it to be a little warmer but never got above 85 degrees except at el capitan reservoir (upper 80's).
breezy but not windy. no long climbs tho and the shortish one up to el cap reservoir was enuff of a sweatbox to dissuade any pre-ride thoughts
of climbing up to the nearby hamlet of crest.

58-miler...up to mt. soledad via the ugly and brutal northern ascent and the rustic fay avenue bike path on the way back. tried to stay away from the weekend traffic at the beaches and was largely successful.
