High Plains Luddite
Neat idea. We hang our bikes from the garage ceiling in the winter but this time of year things start to get tight in the garage with bikes on kickstands and/or other stands.
I bet I could build something similar with lumber, custom-fit to each bicycle.

I would be curious to try it, it seems like a neat idea if it works but I do have some doubts.

Seems like a good option if you don't want to attach anything to a wall. Otherwise, a hook system that hangs the bike from the front wheel seems like it would be easier and take up even less space.
I use the Topeak Swing-up. I like that the bikes are up off the floor and can be angled to be more flat against the wall:
