1976-1978 Schwinn Superior

I believe this to be a 1977 ish Schwinn Superior. Asking price is $65 which I know is worth it, but is there anything special about the components on these? Its local to me, I don't yet have a filet brazed model which I believe would make this a Chicago Schwinn, but I also have strict orders from the wife to start thinning the herd...I do have a '78 LeTour III which is a nice frame. This one looks pretty aged, but would it be worth stripping and storing in the rafters for a rainy day?

Looks like it has seen a hard life. Hard to tell but with the shift levers and a rough look at the front derailleur I guess Huret Challenger RD? Would be nice if the seller had included a drive side picture. Coin flip on this one.

If that was near me and $65, it would be at my house already. but i'm weird like that.
thanks for the info, looks like in '76 the tallest would be a 26" frame, I ride mostly 25" so prob a bit bigger than I need. Appreciate the insight

seller refers to the cycle as a "cyclo-cross" - perhaps that is what it was employed for - well, at least in the sense of gravel grinding/cow trailing

would explain how this present state was achieved

puzzled by the presence of a fork crown cap; recall these as coming through with a true chrome crown

hazetguy's example appears to exhibit such: a true chrome crown

---
@PilotFishBob - Huret Challenger was never a stock rear mech for the Superior

---

seller images near to valueless for evaluation purposes

mfr catalogue page for Superior of 1977 -

Didn’t realize the Super Le Tour 12.2 was above the Superior in 77, thanks for posting.

The Superior likely has more value to a C&V enthusiast than the Le Tour 12.2 since it is made in Chicago and the back story of the fillet brazed Schwinns is neat. That said, the Le Tour is almost undoubtedly a lighter bike. The two were priced around the same in '77 which tells you how Japanese imports were killing American manufacturers around that time.

Update, offered $40 and the superior is coming home with me tomorrow. Thinking about doing a super sport replica with a modern twist. Or maybe a wall hanger get to keep a vintage Chicago Schwinn in the collection, but couldn’t let it go to the dump…

does anyone know if the superior has the same geometry as a super sport or sports tourer?

I’d be curious to know the answer. I thought they all had the same geometry.

If you measure yours, I’ll measure mine.
Mine is a 26” 1973 Sports Tourer

FWIW, I bet that paint can be revived with a lot of elbow grease. Enjoy!
