Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Putting aside the health safety concerns, the school that we practice at is closed.

That's a type of racing, but there is a certain amount of skill involved in a crit, that just isn't there in my garage. A smart trainer is also missing from that equation.

Imagine the first charity ride once we come out of this, if there will ever be such a thing. Jamb packed, and balls to the wall, for 100 miles.

So, a question for the tubeless faithful. In the absence of almost literally anything else interesting to do this summer (and with a bunch of close-to-home rides should anything happen), I'm going to try tubeless again.

1) Which tires are currently favored?
2) Which sealant? Still OrangeSeal?
3) What should I use to inject the sealant?
4) Anything else I should bring along on the rides?

1- GP 5000 TL
2- yes
3- the bottle tip through the valve is what I’ve always done
4- other than a spare tube and CO2?

Last time I tried this the Contis hadn't come out yet. Also, the bottle tip didn't seem to be thin enough for the valve. And the reason I gave up last time was that the first time I (knowingly, but there were no orange patches of visible dried sealant) hit something with the Hutchinsons, it refused to seal and I had to give up and, yes, pop in a tube. There was talk of "bacon strips". Do people still use those? Take a mini-pump to try giving more air for the sealant to work with?

Orange seal also has the injection system with the syringe for a few extra bucks. I have no complaints with the GP 5000, they’ve been great on not so great roads.

my first set of Maxxis Padrone I had the same problem, cut the tire and it didn’t seal and there was no indication the sealant doing its job. The shop had used Stan’s, I blame it on that

I still haven't tried the Contis - maybe next year. At this point, I'm using the same Hutchinsons that did you dirty, but I've got no complaints (well, I did have my first Goldilocks puncture with the last rear tire - it was about 1/4" - but other than that, I've taken several punctures without issue). I plan on putting on the new Schwalbe Pro 1s in a couple/few weeks. I've been very happy with Schwalbe TLs in the past.

I had been using the tube that phrantic mentioned for years - it comes with the smaller (8oz?) bottles of OS - but recently picked up a sealant syringe from Amazon. I think that it's going to be a really worthwhile addition - less guesswork when checking sealant levels and it'll allow me to remove old, watery sealant without unseating/reseating the tire. The only problem at this point is that the ID of my current valve stems (Stan's) is about .2mm too tight for the 3mm tube that comes with the syringe. I'll replace the Stan's stems with some WTB or Milkit stems when I swap out my tires.

I still bring my normal flat kit and bacon strips. The pump is nice if you have to top off when you lose a bit of air before the sealant does the job.

I have used a bacon strip on the aforementioned Goldilocks puncture, but it wouldn't hold - the pressure/size of the cut pushed it out. This was at home, in the stand, though - it may have been a different story during a ride, getting squished with every revolution. The plugs with the brass barbs look interesting, too - I'll probably pick those up sometime, but may not have an occasion to use them for years.

Thanks for the comments guys - I was wondering if Schwalbe or Vittoria was better-regarded than Conti for tubeless. I'll ponder. Though come to think of it,this may be a project for a few weeks later - we're closing on the new house next Friday.

2) The closest to road tubeless I've done is some 30mm CX tires, and I don't have a clear favorite between stans and orange.
3) for setup I inflate without sealant to see if the beads will pop on. If they do, I peel one bead about halfway off, and pour some sealant right into the tire, then pop that bead back on and reinflate. For top-ups I use an olde 4oz Orange Seal bottle and hose (rinse after every use).

I plan on trying all three, eventually. The new Schwalbe are supposedly made to the as-yet-unreleased ETRTO tubeless spec and, as a manufacturer, they've been well-regarded in the road tubeless game for years - I have high hopes. The Conti and Vittoria get the same kind of mixed user reviews - great tires but impossible to mount, yadda, yadda, yadda. I really believe that most of the difficulties are from people that don't know what they're doing (even though they seem to think themselves competent), but I'll see for myself eventually.
