Addiction 2022.2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm painfully aware of what Wordle is. There's no way to mute posts mentioning it, unfortunately.

I like being an outlier but that’s not why I abstain from Wordle. I just don’t want another addiction to add to my solitaire addiction and sudoku addiction. Those are challenging enough.

3 days? When I toured across the country we did back to back hilly centuries the weekend before we started and I don't think it really helped. We found touring itself gets you into touring shape, as others had told us would happen. The third day was the hardest, after that it becomes almost routine.
The first couple weeks we were doing 90-100 mile days and after the first week it was super hot. My bike was 55-60 pounds. Of course, I was 36 at that time. I was riding for 6 weeks with 2 rest days. Oh, I had Giardia for the last part of the trip.

This is what I expect will happen with Apple and the fabled Apple Car.

Software is a relatively low investment and relatively easy to scale. Hardware is much harder on both fronts, and that was before the pandemic and war. It's also slower. Even if the smart bike demand were sustained, by the time this thing was out it would be competing with an ever-larger installed base of Peloton, which would also be easier to convince non-cycling spouses for, and looks classy in a house instead of like a kid's toy. This was dumb all the way through.
The other thing is, their "Tron Bike" Smart trainer design primarily would appeal to Zwift users - who almost by definition already have a Smart trainer. I also imagine the underwhelming response they got to their reveals played a part in the decision.

I might not even get zwift next winter. I honestly hate in doors, and the type of riding I usually do on the trainer is strictly zone 2 which I can do with the free wahoo app.

I do get pretty bad FOMO watching people on strava doing events and such but I never do them. I’m assuming the price will be even higher next year.

Datlas Family news update:

Daughter #1 finished college today and graduates on Sunday. She is looking for music teaching jobs.
Daughter #2 finished 2nd year USC and is coming home tonight for the summer. I hope she gets a summer job but afaik nothing lined up.

We are going to College Station to help the youngest move some things to a Dallas apartment since he'll be interning in the D. Poor kid will be paying for two apartments this summer.

I carried a loaf of bread, or part of a loaf, a package of cookies and several bananas. Maybe some nuts or snack foods, too. We stopped for lunch most days, too. I lost 10 pounds on the trip while eating 6000 calories per day.

I did a 9 day trip with my ex wife around Oregon. Over 600 miles and I had learned about eating by then and had no issues. She was not happy the whole time and made sure to let me know.

She loved the overnight trips we used to do. We would stop at the roadside fruit vendors and gorge on strawberries fresh from the field. Stuff like that was the good stuff.
