Smart trainer, cannot feel gradients in Zwift

Hello all,

I just got a Tacx Flux smart trainer. I was able to pair it via bluetooth both as my "power source" and "controllable" in Zwift. Using a Macbook Pro.

However, when I ride up hills in Zwift, I am not getting a resistance change when I encounter hills. At least not significantly. I do not have to shift to an easier gear, and can pretty much hold the same cadence when encountering 7-10% gradients. This doesn't seem right.

I have turned the "trainer difficulty setting" in Zwift to "Max" and notice no difference.

Is there another setting I should check / am missing?

Thanks!

Have you tried restarting Zwift? If my trainer gets unplugged during a ride, the variable resistance function goes away and it just stays at a fixed resistance, only way to fix it is ending the ride, closing Zwift, and starting over. If you're on a 10% gradient at max trainer difficulty, you should absolutely need to shift into your smallest gear, so something isn't working correctly there.

That does seem odd. I do wonder if a restart might help.

Couple things to check. Make sure your not on ERG mode, and the other is check settings in zwift to make sure your "trainer difficulty" setting is not all the way to the left. Most keep it in the center at 50%, others slide it all the way to the right to 100%.

Edit: I see you have already checked trainer difficulty

Yeah, I think the default is 50%. I have mine set to 225. :Þ

Make sure the firmware is up to date on the trainer. If there is an app that is available to calibrate the trainer then do so. Completely pull the plug and then restart it after some time has passed. Remove Zwift and then re-instal it. Then don't connect the trainer to the computer - just use Zwift to find the trainer. Try that. If you still have problems then try another platform for Zwift like a phone or ipad/tablet.

I'd try connecting your trainer to zwift directly instead of to the computer.

Does your trainer call for spin-down calibrations like the Wahoo trainers do? If it does, do one of those to calibrate everything.

Does your power output go down or up on those hills?

You know, if you download the Zwift data file (in .fit format) and import it into Golden Cheetah, you can look at it in Aerolab and see how the VE profile compares with Zwift's profile. It's interesting that you can see drafting, and changes in rolling resistance when you go from asphalt to dirt.

Are you in workout mode or just free riding or racing?

Workouts are in ERG mode and your ride is determined by the power output for the segment of the workout plan.

If you are just riding around or racing, you should be able to tell a big difference. Check out the Alpe du Zwift and you will see!

He did. Zwift recognized it as the power source and the controllable item. Got to be either firmware, or a bug in Zwift.
