Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Im guessing it’s a stiff link or the chain is too long.

Wife is doing a little better today. My family, and her family was at the house so she told me to do the group ride today. It was with 3 of the other members of the race team. All of them are super strong. Got to see some new routes which was nice.

Madone is still squeaking/ creaking. I’ve checked everything, I just don’t get it. Not a huge deal but it is annoying, and a little upsetting on a new bike.

Not sure if it’s the amount I have been riding lately or what, but I could not get comfortable on the bike today. I think my stem needs to be dropped a little bit, and I think I should have gone with a longer stem. The issue with dropping the stem is it has to be cut, I can’t try it out and make a decision. I’ve done centuries before and I don’t remember being this uncomfortable.

The road itself is great. The lower section from the bottom for 9 miles to the intersection of Angeles Forest Highway is where most of the traffic is but it depends on when you go. I don't mind climbing it if it's early and traffic is light but I'm not a fan of descending it when there is traffic. It can be a blast, the surface is good and the turns are fun but I don't like being around cars at speed.

The part after that intersection is much better and I have had many memorable rides up there going back to 1989. The early part of Covid saw a bunch of race car wannabe types on Saturdays.

Yeah, it’s kind of meshy. Doesn’t bother me, but I haven’t tried the bibs yet. Can you see my nips?

Do your pedals spin when your walk your bike or when you spin the rear wheel in the stand?

If they don't - good, but you'll have to keep looking for your problem.

If they do spin, I might know the problem.

they don’t spin moving forward or walking it. It’s really strange because it feels fine 99 % of the time

The new chain was the correct length, it had 2 links overlap, which is what’s on the bike now, need to take out links on the other chain still

Surface altimetry is one of the ways they track ocean currents from satellites. The Gulf Stream surface, for example, sits a few feet higher than the surrounding water. Water is also higher under a low pressure system.

Well, that's good... but it only eliminates one potential problem.

I really can't see chain length being a problem - the chain is only two links too long and, being a gravel bike, I would assume that the RD has plenty of chain wrap capacity. Just in case, what's the largest cog on the cassette?

Double-check that the quicklink is fully seated, but I doubt that's the issue... if it wasn't seated, it would probably just pop instead of skipping. Ditto with stiff link - you just waxed that chain, right? They might be a little stiff for the first few minutes of pedaling, but literally only a few minutes.

Are you sure that the indexing doesn't need a little tuning? Is it noisy when pedaling in the stand in some gears? Hell, do any of the cogs wiggle?

indexing makes sense since the bike is new, I’ll check the cogs too- it’s noisier than I expected in the stand

When I'm in doubt, I do a crash recovery reset on the system, then index it.

Does it get quieter if you back the tension off about half a turn of the barrel adjuster? Noisy plus junping chain says 'too much tension' to me,
