Advice XC hard tail

I road mountain 87-2005 last bike being Cannondale Caad 4. Then switched over to road. I am going back to mountain but riding road as well. Looking to get going with 1500 and would like to stay with a hard tail leaning toward XC. However I’m loving the new geometry of XC bikes for having a blast on the decent. Been looking at Trek Marlin 8 and Giant. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? I may also ad I’m in North Texas so no real accents like the west coast areas.
Thank you and look forward to what y’all have to say.

I think you would be happy with an Xcaliber but happier with a Procaliber (or other brand equivalent). I know that blows up your budget. Sorry.

If you are snobbish about suspension you’d look for a bike with the Charger 2, not Charger Race Day damper in the fork. Or a Fox.
