Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hot & Sunny Cycling Accessories

I am doing a 140 Mile bike ride during the day Saturday, with temps reaching up to 95 degrees. I usually ride in the morning before the sun really gets strong. Any recommendations on how to stay cool? I was looking at getting sun sleeves for my arms and maybe a gaiter, but would that actually make me too hot in those temps?

Well vented helmet
Lightweight jersey that breathes well
Halo sweatband if your head sweats a lot
Gloves will help with grip on the bars
Good sunglases

Otherwise, stay hydrated and try to stay in the shade.

Thank you for these suggestions! I will be getting specialized UV deflect arm sleeves and also some tall cooling white socks, and of course staying hydrated. Thanks!

Remember that it's more important to put water into your body rather than onto it if your supply is limited.

Is this an organized ride with rest areas with snacks and drinks? If so, take advantage of them and drink lots. I know for me, I would need some electrolytes in addition to mass quantities of water for a ride like that. I didn't see any mention of sunscreen but I would use a quality zinc oxide based sunscreen on my face and neck at minimum and take some with you to reapply as needed.

I wear a skull cap under my helmet and soak that on hot days. It'll dry out fast in a dry heat but will feel really good for a while.

I wear sun sleeves/long sleeves in the hot and humid - definitely recommended. A gaiter? Oof - heck no. That'd get way too hot for me - the upper chest area expels a lot of heat.
