So, anyone know a good spindle length? I'm assuming it'll be somewhere around 120mm.

Edit: I found this spindle on looses crews, 124mm Sugino Maxy spindle. Seems like the right size. I'll confirm or deny once the cranks arrive.

121.5mm, for English (68mm) BB shell. 127.5mm for Italian (70mm) BB shell.

Arabesque is FC-6200 forged not swaged.
FC-6100 is the first 5 arm "600" and is swaged and preceeds 6200 by 1 year.

Yes it does look different; sharp corner at crank arm & star. The one I have does not have that sharp edge.
Velobase:
Clearly swaged https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.as...m=115&AbsPos=1
Not swaged https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.as...m=115&AbsPos=0
I need to check my DX-4000 more closely; the photo is a spare set.

This turned into a thread hijack; sorry OP.

also, you can see on the swaged one the spider arms are quite different - the fluting on each arm is less carefully done and shallower, and rather than taper elegantly towards each crank bolt, the arms flare out again. very odd duck, this was.

With a stronlight triplizer unswaged
although I've never had a problem with either style.

Swaged Maxy was dealer-installed original on a '78 Trek TX770 (called a 912 on the original invoice) I bought from the original owner.

I've known one Maxy II crank to fail, the predecessor to this one. The spider, including the swaged part, was already damaged when I began working with it but I was using it as the mockup for my K-Mart Triple, a 34-45 double with a 22T freewheel cog bolted onto the spider as a granny gear and that was mostly to get the spacing right. First ride I shifted into the 22 front and 34 rear and spun the spider so I got this crank (Fuji-branded Maxy II) and have had no problems.

No, no, it's just picking up the threads from those discussing it 9 years ago. Fitting to get to the bottom of the mystery

That is truly something else...and you've had no issues so far? Do you ever use the granny gear while standing up and grinding up steep hills, or is it mostly used with smooth pedaling?

No issues but not huge miles over the years. And I'm a lightweight, not physically but muscularly, so no grinding for me. I do have a pretty smooth cadence.

Found this thing that's been hiding in the garage, a Super Maxy of the T/A look. Just the one arm and it appears to be swaged.

Swaged or not, that's pretty cool!

simonab what does the spindle look like? I can't quite see it in the picture. If it is as I suspect a normal spindle with a threaded stud then a 14mm nut should work - as far as I know it can be any brand as long as its the correct thread for the spindle. I have swapped SR, campy, and Sugino cranks on the same spindle with the same nuts.

The nuts are 10mm x 1.25 and typically have a flange with a special surface:

oneclick Yes I should have been more specific - 10x1.25 with a 14mm head; flanged nut. I was referring to a "standard crank nut".....
