My first 1000. I just picked it up last night.

Supposedly an 86'. It's in rough shape. There's clear nail varnish on it where it's been scuffed and scraped. There's weird stuff going on with it. Right brake lever is thrashed. But, it'll make a great restoration project 😉

Any thoughts on similarities between the Miyata 1000's and Miyata 610's?
Of course the 1000's were spec'd with higher cost components.

I had a 1986 1000 that I really liked but proved to be a size too tall so I sold it.

Last week I picked up a 1985 610 in very nice condition that fits me well.

I've changed it up a bit to suit me and have right at 60 miles on it and think it rides very similar to the 86 1000.

Sticker shows it also has the splined triple butted tubing.

My guess is many manufacturers with similar models of touring bikes over subsequent years passed on various upgrades and improvements to the models a level below in their line.

My one complaint is this 1985 610 does not have the seat tube bottle cage bosses,
just on top of the downtube and the underside of the downtube.

If you're going to spec two bottle cage boss locations why not the seat tube bosses rather than the under side of down tube?

At any rate I love these vintage touring bikes.
Mine is sporting true to size 700x42 tires.

It looks like the primary difference is the Mangalight fork- HOWEVER- it specifically states the stays are CrMo on the 1000, it does NOT specify for the 610. It looks like page 14 is missing and *may* have more detailed specs for the 610. *may*

To me- a lot of the difference in the upper level bikes is going to be the material of the main frame and the material of the stays and fork. Thinking about it like Trek- a 700 series bike had a 531 frame with 531 fork blades and stays. The next level down, a 600 series bike- would have a 531 frame, but CrMo or manganese alloy fork and stays.

So what does that mean? Theoretically, the 'less strong' metal will have to be thicker to achieve the same strength and therefore weigh more. On a tourer- that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Do you think the lack of a seat tube bottle cage was because of the intent to have a pump, carrying strap or frame bags mounted there?

I've wondered about this too. My winter project is an '84 Fuji TS III and has these bosses - top and underside of DT. Nothing on the ST. It may have been "a thing" in the early 80's. I've read that the underside cage was mostly used to hold stove fuel. As mentioned, that ST location may have been preferred for a frame pump.

My '87 Voyageur has all three ( maybe "normal" by late 80s) and I used the underside cage for fuel this past summer on the GAP. Fuel was only accessed once a day so under the DT is good enough. My pump is a very effective mini so I have no frame pump to store. Three cages worked well for me. I may use a clamp-on on the Fuji. Or nothing.

My '84. I bought it from the original owner who toured extensively on it including a couple of tours of Europe in the '90s.

The frame was drilled for a dyno and it still works very well. The wires are run under the fenders and encased in silicone.

I didn't change anything except that I put on a nice set of wheels that I found on CL, black Phils laced to Mavic Open Sport rims.

That's a good idea on carrying fuel in the DT underside cage.

On two bike tours I've done on a previously owned 1983 Specialized Expedition which had all 3 bottle cage bosses I carried a shorter water bottle
( a tall would not fit) in the under DT cage which was perpetually dirty but I could pour water into another container.

As to the pump carried on the ST I've done this b4 and works fine. However, I personally think bottle bosses are preferable and if they are good for the 1000 why not the 610?

I do get it that to achieve certain price points on lower models sacrifices have to be made
so that's probably the reasoning.

Not a big deal for me as on other bikes without ST bosses this clamp on boss is one of the best I've used in case anyone else might need one.

Later I may have my local builder add ST bosses.

I will say my 610 seems to be working with me on a ride. I've had a few other bikes that did this and I guess it's the bit of flex or 'planing' or whatever the proper term.

The 700x42 tires could be contributing to this.

The One Thousand sizes are listed in cm and the Six Ten model in inches. Interesting.

I think the closest size you will find is a 57cm, which I have. I feel like it may or may not be too tall for me (I'm 5'10). I mean, I had no problem with it, but if it was a 56cm the it would be golden!
