tooth implant

broke a healthy tooth on an olive pit Wifey left in her salad 2 months ago. Doc couldn't do an adequate periodontal crown extension so they yanked it. nearby teeth are perfectly fine, with no prior work, so a bridge is not recommended & I'll be getting an implant. guess it's gonna take 6 mos and a cpl bucks out of pocket

anyone else fortunate enough to go this route?

I had the second to rear molar go years ago and had a crown put on. Eventually it failed so I had a bridge done wit the adjoining teeth. One of them started to fail and the bridge was lost. I had to have a bone graph since there was so much bone loss the implant would break into the sinus cavity. I had 2 implants done and a 3 tooth bridge installed.

Rock solid.

Luckily my brother-in-law is a dentist. I had the bone graph done by a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School and he gave me a 50% discount. The implants done by his friend that gave me a huger "courtesy" and my brother-in-law did the restoration. If it was all out of pocket, it would of been over $12,000.

I have full bottom in plants done a year ago. Very happy as they function and are as close to having your original teeth as possible. I would say definitely worth exploring, to see if it will work for you. Not cheap but worth it IMHO

Had one 2 years ago, not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Glad I did it, the tooth was dying and broke, dentist said it was time.

A little soreness for a few days, but nothing tylenol didn't handle. You do need to keep it really clean and free of food particles as much as possible while it heals, clean frequently, they should give you antiseptic sponges and a rinse.

Worst part was dental insurance only covered about half, still was almost 3 grand out of pocket. I coulda had a really nice bike for that.

I lost a tooth a few years ago to a rare malady called "external resorption". My regular dentist, (who is close to retirement), had never seen a case, but correctly guessed what it probably was. He sent me to an endodontist who did a root canal and diagnosed it. The endodontist said he has only seen ~200 cases in his 40 years of practicing, but that is due to them all getting referred to him by dentists.

The SOP, (which my insurance would had paid), would have been a bridge.
But after doing some research I opted for an implant because:
1. Research indicated people were happier with implants than bridges.
2. Teeth with root canals eventually get brittle and fail, resulting in an implant anyway.

The biggest annoyance was the 6 month wait for the jawbone to fill in before they could install the implant. But fortunately, it was a molar, so the gap was not visible to others.

Same here, but I find that I use that tooth far more often than I would use another bicycle.

Can you get it with a cyanide capsule, just in case?

Or maybe a Viagra hidden in there?

They do use a torque wrench when attaching the bridge.

Yeah, but one was back in the day paid for by the military. For the other insurance picked up 70% of the cost and I don't remember the bill being quite that discounted to the insurance company high. Think my co-pay on it was circa $650, but that was mebbe six or seven years back. Whatever, it's just the cost of doing stay healthy business.

I never saw a dentist until I went into the service, the result of being a poor southern boy I guess.

I have two molar implants as well as numerous crowns and one bridge. Worth every dime.

Pricey . . . but hell if lets you bite into an apple it could be worth it!
Getting 2 front ones done for total of $7,000 (that's with a bit of haggling) includes bone graft and 9 months waiting.
At age 83 I may get a couple years use out of it yet!

9 months!
I I thought 6 months was bad.
BTW Since it is the front teeth, do they have a cosmetic option to hide the gap until the implants are in?

Yes, a crown attached to a retainer that snaps in place.

A small percentage of patients have complications, according to my dentist. Mine caused a root canal in the tooth next to it, and some gum loss. Years later they found that the doc had left some cement that he didn't clean off, and they had to replace the abutment and crown. Insurance didn't cover any of it so it was about $7K.

I have two dental implants. I have had two teeth go bad due to dental resorption. The first went pretty smoothly. The second, not so good. The antibiotics I took when they pulled what was left of the tooth totally messed up my digestion. Let's just say food did not stay in me very long. I begged the oral surgeon to allow me not to take them again when the implant was put in. He agreed with great reservation. He was right. I got a raging infection which set back the implant about six months. I have never been in so much pain. I was taking two Vicodin and they helped numb the pain for about 30 minutes. All is good now, but it was quite an adventure.

My path to my implant started when I was nine and gave a big kiss to the bottom of a swimming pool. (Who would have thought that one could get to the bottom of a nine-foot pool so quickly?) Many years later, my dentist replaced my two crowns. I immediately developed gum problems. A new dentist realized that my problem was likely that the new crowns were a steel base to which my gums were reacting. Several thousand dollars later, I had two new new crowns with gold bases. A year later, I was shopping for shoes for my young son and a mouth guard for me. The boy melted down and I left the store without a mouth guard. Of course the next morning I caught an elbow in one of those crowns playing basketball and broke the tooth off in the root.

At the time, early '90s, implants were pretty new. Even though I had dental insurance, it didn't pay for them. However, it seemed worth it to avoid involving yet another tooth with a bridge. The oral surgeon dug out the remaining bit of root and put a bit of donor bone in place. I still remember his assistant wielding a club to knock that piece of bone in place. She could give Barry Bonds a run for his money in a home run derby. I'm pretty sure she gave me a concussion, but the bone got in where it needed to be.

Many months later, close to a year, my dentist put the tooth on the piece of titanium that had been placed in the donor bone. He said he wanted to use a weak bonding agent just in case the tooth needed to be taken off. Well, that night it came off when I flossed it. The stronger glue that he put on the next morning has held for two-plus decades, so I guess it works.
