it entails ATTEMPTING that cog size and cranking the B-screw in All the Way.... crossing fingers and quietly mumbling incantations may help.

and IF it fits, a new chain cut to the correct length will be needed.... and i'd strongly advise the "Small-Small" chain length setting method but someone will say that it doesn't work for them, so i won't mention what has worked for me since 1968.

It has to be a 12-30 10 speed casssette or can you make do with a 12-28?

If you have to have 12-30 then it's available in the higher price point Ultegra CS-6700

https://www.universalcycles.com/shop...4&category=534

Other brands too. But this isn't filtered for Shimano compatibility.......

Seems like a important thing to know. At least it is if we are talking about what range you want on the cassette. This is your opportunity to change to something else if you need it.

If you seldom use the 30 tooth cog, then you might just get something with less teeth on the low gear. 28 or even less. If you need that 30 tooth cog and there are somewhat frequent times when even it is not enough, then a 32 or 34 tooth might be the thing to look for the low cog. However then you'll have to know exactly what your rear DR is so you can see if it'll handle bigger or not. The part number for the DR will be stamped on the backside of the parallelogram if it's Shimano and can be difficult to see with the wheel in. Might be gunked up too.

Shimano has traditionally been conservative with their “max” numbers. This means that you have a decent chance to run a 32t max cog.

It's a trek-domane-4-3-compact-56cm with a Shimano CS-4600 10spd, 12-30t

Get any 10 speed 12-30t cassette, but they are not as common as 11-28t and 11-32t cassettes. You might be able to get the 11-32t to work; for sure the 11-28t will work but it might not give you a low enough climbing gear. If you need a lower climbing gear you might as well go with a 11-34t or 11-36t, but that may require a new rear derailleur.

So basically it's "what was there" not "what I need" or "what I can work with"
If you don't find yourself running out of low on hills with the 30, you could probably easily go to the more available 28.
If you can push the 12 an 11 shouldn't be an issue either

And what do you want to do for that trek-domane-4-3-compact-56cm with a Shimano CS-4600 10spd, with a 12-30 cassette? CS-4600's are no longer manufactured but there are other 10 speed cassettes you can put on it.

There'll be other considerations too when you change the cassette. One will be chain length. And getting a larger tooth count low cog might require a DR change. Also, if you have decided your cassette is worn out, then I'm assuming it's because you put a new chain on the bike and it now skips on some of the cogs. But if you haven't replaced the chain and there isn't any skipping, then there probably isn't any reason to change a 12-30 cassette for a 12-30 cassette.

Don't be shy...

Open up and share some details about why you seem focused on it being a 12-30 CS-4600 and nothing else.

I run a 50/34 chain ring combo and have no real need for an 11T cog in a 11-speed cassette, and am hardly the only one (here on BF) who thinks so. OP is trying to replace a 10-speed 12-30 cassette, so using a 11-XX model may increase the gearing gap between cogs by more than he is comfortable with. I agree he needs to examine/discuss his cassette and gearing needs to see if other cassette options (e.g., 12-28) are suitable.

But just for fits and wiggles let me throw another option out here:

Prestacycle UniBlock Cassette | 10-Speed Shimano / SRAM for HG 10 Freehub - Prestacycle

That 12-30 is a really nice cassette with very good gapping. If you like it, Amazon has the CS-6700 for $63 on their CS Saturday sale.

No, you won't even need to crank the B-screw all the way, just turn it in until the "motor boating" sound goes away in the largest cog.

Shimano is conservative with their ratings. Going 2 teeth over the rated number of teeth will almost always work. Just make sure it doesn't bind in the large-large combo before you ride it.
