Happy Eroica Day
Are you like me and still feeling a bit of disappointment over Eroica being canceled/postponed again this year?
The guys doing the Tourica and others that kept their lodging reservations in Cambria should gets some good riding in today, and hopefully meet up with other like minded vintage cycling enthusiasts and BF members, so they're covered. I'm home today, using vacation days scheduled for the event. After I'm able to free myself from the weight of our new puppy, that has me anchored to this chair, I'm going to roll out on what would have been my Eroica bike. Temps in SoCal this morning will be in the low 70's, a nice break from the heat, and I may be able to comfortably wear one of my wool jerseys to complete the feel of the event.
I'll be sure to get some pics and post them up.
What are you guys doing today in place of going to Cambria?

Hi doggie!
I will be going to work. Maybe 3rd time reschedule is the charm and I’ll be able to go next spring. I did a ride on Wednesday which included a super hard climb, think Kiler Canyon x 3. Maybe over the next few months, get up that climb a few more times and I’ll ride the 42 chain ring next year.

There was also an Eroica alternate ride in SoCal this weekend. This one was not well publicized but was circulated on Facebook, mainly to a circle of friends of Brian Bayliss. I do not know how many were in attendance.

A 42 is Classic. And I’m also baby sitting:

I started attempting the big Saturday group ride. Nothing like barely hanging on for the warm up climb and then getting dropped as the descent begins for motivation. Every year it gets harder to find my masochismo. The BWR is on EroicaCA weekend which bums me out a little. I'd like to do both.

I was intent on going , had my reservations for our campsite , but one meeting with my largest customer a week ago and I had to cancel. I went for a ride this morning from my home in Santa Paula California out to Ventura harbor , about 18 miles one way . It was beautiful , low seventies and not crowded. The beach by the harbor was nice. I leaned my bike against the wall and watched the surf before heading back to my shop in Ventura. While I was at the beach, a guy came up and commented on my bike , I guess he raced back in the eighties, so I had a nice conversation with him. It was not like being at Eroica but a nice consolation. Chin up- keep on pedaling!

BWR is worth doing, I recommend. I’ve done both the Waffle and the lesser Wafer. The Waffle is huge and super tough, I was on the bike for over ten hours. The Wafer is the way to go imo. At around 75 miles, it’s still challenging and you ride a lot of the same “cobble” sections as the Waffle. You leave feeling like you accomplished something.

I headed out over Mulholland towards the valley. I ended up leaving a little later than I had planned because I took the little guy for a quick walk. Weather was nice, roads were mostly clear except for the occasional motorcycle group ride.
One group of mostly vintage bikes was huge, lots of old BMWs, Triumphs and nice old Japanese stuff.
Mulholland drops into the back side Calabasas. There I crossed over the 101 and through the Valley. Last climb of the day over Santa Sue and I was ready for lunch. Fifty-five miles with about 3500 ft of elevation. I’ve never done this route on this bike before, but my times weren’t that different. None of the climbs are that steep, although Santa Sue is tough after that many miles. The Walton’s easiest climbing gear is a 40-24. I’m definitely not spinning this gear, but it doesn’t feel that bad over most stuff and I kind of like climbing out of the saddle a little more than I do on my other bikes.
So not a bad day, and way more fun than being at work.
