Addiction 2021.4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think its true. Both my wife and sone had it and both are vaxed. Very mild flulike symptoms. Both recovered within 3-5 days.

This is from a White House COVID briefing in October. I posted it to Facebook hoping my antivax niece would see it, back before she unfriended me for trying to get her not to risk death because the guy she's sleeping with - who was cheating on her - is a conspiracy nut.

Yup. We decided to pull the plug on our family gathering plans for Thanksgiving. Our primary concern was my side of the family, with a few hook-line-and-sinker conservatives and another couple of unaffiliated anti-vaxxers. We'll get together at my dad's in a couple weeks and avoid the rest of the family that'll be there on Thurs.

The anti-vax, anti-mask thing and some of the ridiculousness on “our” side make me think about schismogenesis, the social principle named by the anthropologist Gregory Bateson, whereby neighboring societies create exaggerated cultural variations to differentiate themselves. There is no other explanation that makes any sense to me.

Thank goodness - I finally wrapped up a Craigslist sale that I'd posted a few days ago. It was for the old-school, big iron, thickness planer that I replaced with my early Black Friday score. It needs a little attention and I priced it aggressively just to get rid of it quickly... but it was probably too aggressive, as it brought out more tire-kickers than intended. Juggling potential appointments (including one wherein I was stood up) was getting to be a hassle, so I was happy to heft that heavy pig in to Farmer Tim's pickup and see it drive away.

Ridiculous as it might be, it's not killing hundreds of thousands of people.

True and there are other examples from anthropology where the apparent urge to be different had terrible costs. I’m glad I’m on the side that doesn’t have to reject rationality entirely.

I agree with this, but I am getting links from patients who have "sources" stating that the best approach is to not get vaccinated and instead take Ivermectin.

Sigh.

It's a wonder I don't gain 20 lbs in the last 2 months of the year!
This year my birthday is the day after Thanksgiving, so that doubles the amount of leftover desserts. Not complaining, I'll HTFU and find a way to deal with it.

All of this talk of Thanksgiving and dessert has made me realize that, with our recent change in plans, we don't have any desert on-hand. Other than pecans, I think that I still have everything I need for a pecan pie. Maybe I'll have to add it to the list and whip it up tomorrow.

One of the most infuriating things about our current situation is the abandonment of reason and empirical observation as a method for determining truth, in favor of paranoia and wishful thinking. And for what? I guess there's some emotional reward in thinking you are special because you know The Truth They're Trying To Hide, but people aren't even bothering to evaluate the nonsense they're swallowing while rejecting the objectively verifiable. And then they think THEY are the skeptics!!! It's possible we're too stupid collectively to survive.

Ugh, this is already kicking my anxiety up. Time to think about bikes. Or tools. Or something.

Oh - I held the Green jersey on Zwift today. Good thing that those sprints were only on paved sections, because the TT bike really sucked on the gravel bits. 300w on flat ground was getting me something like 20kph.

I find when I'm getting wound up that an hour on the bike works wonders, even indoors, especially if I really hammer.
