Watched one of my 36 y/o sons do a circuit race this afternoon. He's a Cat3 and while I missed his first race he placed high enough in that race to be within one point of Cat2 - good for him. I understand that there are occasional races with a 65+ category. Any of you out there partaking? The challenge of a race would give me more incentive to get out on my single.

There are very few age categorized races other than by masters category. For example, there are 35+, 45+ and 55+ masters. Typically, these are Cat 1,2,3 and 4 races. The 55+ peloton is very tough and not much slower than the elite P/1/2 field. USA Cycling championship events such as District or State, Nationals and Worlds have age brackets starting with 30 to 34, 35 to 39 and etc. There is a 65 to 69 and 70 to 75 and etc. The 65 to 69 age bracket is very strong and hardly old.

There is also the Senior Games which start at 50 and have the same age brackets. However, these occur only once per year. I have a 70 year old fried who races and travels seeking out specialty races for the 70+ racers. But there are not many.

There are probably some local practice crits and time trials that you could enter. I am sure your son knows all this and has the local knowledge to steer you in the right direction.

If you want to race, enter: buy a one day license and give it a try in one of the masters groups. If you are trying to figure out how hard the race may be or find something easier, the easiest USA cycling sanctioned races will be the Cat 5s with the young men. The older masters men will be too tough.

If there is a M45 cat 5 or 4/5 field, do that. The riders will be less squirrely than regular cat 5 but not as fast as M45 1/2/3. Some races here in NorCal even offer M55 4/5 or M55 5.

Another way to get into racing is to do time trials. Since they are not mass start the potential for crashes is much lower, and the organizers can have whatever age categories they want because they are not limited by the number of fields they can manage on the course.
