Riding the Outer Banks

I am thinking of stopping by the Outer Banks for a couple of days, the end of January. Is anyone familiar with the cycling there? How is Rt 12 to ride on? The shoulder? I'd like to do maybe two days of 50-60 miles each, then move on. Back roads of any duration would work. I see that there are two Rail Trails north of Nags Head, but only 6 and 9 miles long. Thank you.

Moved to South East.

It has been many years since I was down in the Outer Banks, but I brought a bike on a family vacation and did a lot of riding between Corolla and a bit south of Nags Head. Lots of cars on the road but mostly decent shoulder, though often blown sand. Many people on bikes, traffic was used to it.

The down side was there was always a brisk in my face on half the ride. In the afternoons, often almost gale force winds - invisible hills!

But, been many hurricanes and construction down there since I did that.

I ran across a CycleBlaze journal by a guy who just posted his 2016 ride from VA Beach down along the Outer Banks - here.
