Smile Freecycle: old trailer find + craigslist: bike = utility set-up

I've been thinking about putting together a bike/trailer combo for utility purposes. My wife spotted someone listing an "old horrible condition bike trailer" on Freecycle. Well, I like "free" thus checked it out. Decided it still had some utility life in it. Pulled off all the canvas (at least what was left of it) and cleaned off all the mud and grass-clippings that were covering the trailer. Apparently, the trailer had been living outside next to a farm field the last couple years. The tires need to be replaced, but the tubes hold air. After a proper cleaning, lubing, and de-rusting it aint a half-bad little trailer. I have no idea the manufacturer of the trailer nor its age. I like that it folds up and can store all its parts into the bottom plastic platform. It still needs some work and modification but I am looking forward to the process.

Not really a fan of the hitch/clasp that grabs the chainstay. It wiggles and can shift into the spokes of the back tire. The knob also sticks out enough to interact with my foot as I pedal unless I pay attention. Need to work out a better system.

Lastly, picked up a $25 dollar Specialized Hardrock Ultra (~circa 98) to complete the utility set-up. Here is an image of first use. Loaded with trashcans to transport to the community picnic this weekend.

Later 2morrow, off to the recycling center to cash in the aluminium cans.

My neighbors are beginning to wonder about my growing collection of purposeful bikes.

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

Nice find! The arm on the trailer looks pretty similar to the arm Burley uses, I wonder if this is a very old Burley?

Saweet! Complete with a rigid bottom to boot! As for the Hitch maybe you can adapt a Burley hitch to it.

Greetings all. Made a run to the recycling center this weekend. Got a bunch of odd looks from everyone when I pulled up on the bike pulling the trailer all loaded up. One person moved out of my way thinking I was there to fish stuff out of the bins rather than contribute. I smiled and proceeded to toss in the cardboard, plastics, and newspapers.

I have to admit, this was a slow heavy load for a windy day. Worked hard down the road without much back tire clearance, but it t'was fun!
