Due to military operations, the bicycle facility on Old Pacific Highway from State Park to Las Pulgas will be closed as follows:

When: July 15-19. Daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Where: From Las Pulgas to State Park
Why: Closure due to military operations.

During the dates of restricted access, cyclists may ride on the Interstate 5 (I-5) shoulder as an alternate route.

Please pass this message along to others in your organizations and jurisdictions as you feel appropriate.

i will say i did appreciate the nod to military history with the one eighth-sized rommel's asparagus blocking our usual
egress point at the southern end of san onofre state park/northern end camp pendleton along old hwy 101.
not just for the beaches of normandy...

I had to look that up... so are you talking Rommelspargel (used to hinder gliders at various landing fields, basically just vertical poles with barb wire strung between) or Hemmbalken, which is a big log supported at one end by three smaller logs, which was an atlantic beach defense designed to impede landing craft.

i had been under the impression that rommel’s asparagus comprised 2-3 different defenses established for the beach areas of western europe. what i was thinking of and what i actually encountered was more of a czech hedgehog or “jack” from the child’s game.

You know it's gonna be hot, and you prepare for how hot you know it's gonna be, and it's still not enough. Including post-ride, I was just north of 15L for the day. Didn't pee from 11am until 9pm.

Nice ride. Since I have not been getting out early and its been close to 100 on the last few hours of my SoCal rides, I have chosen some flat beach routes. Oceanside to Del Mar loop and SART the last few days. Did punish myself in the hills of Corona a few times recently.

Yesterday I rode solo from Orange Metrolink Station to Oceanside with route thru Santiago Canyon before heading to coast. It was very warm - average 90 F

I used my Camelbak Lobo hydration pack filled with ice and water to supplement my bottles with electrolyte mix. Went thru 4.5 24 oz bottles with electrolyte mix (Infinit GoFar in first two bottles and GU hydration mix in others). Stopped after Canyon at Cook's Corner and filled bottles (I drank 1.5 bottles in canyon so added water to the half filled bottle). Drank a Pickle Juice shot and a cup of cold water before heading on way.

Got to beach area and stopped in San Clemente at 7/11 to buy water. Filled both bottles with water. Added cold water to my Camelbak and drank the last bit in water bottle plus another Pickle Juice shot.

Got to San Onofre state park at 52 miles in and stopped at shaded picnic table to eat a snack. Then on thru park and onto 5 fwy for last miles to Oceanside. Couldn’t go thru Camp Pendleton as they changed base access for cyclists last year.

Enjoyed 🍺 and 🍕 then got on 🚊 back to my car.

Yesterday, 56 mostly flat miles from Camarillo and south on PCH. Got warm by the end of the ride.

Today, 102 km (sounds cooler in metric, doesn’t it ) with 686 meters of climbing. From Ventura to Summerland with some hills in between. Weather was overcast and cool.

headed up the coast to get my yearly camp pendleton pass and do a flattish century there and back but, lo and behold, after an unspirited 20 miles, discovered in del mar that i had broken one of my saddle rails. wobbly times. was too far away to ride to o-side for my pass, then train it back but was too close to pizza port in solana beach to ignore it. it was lunchtime after all. grubbed and grogged there then meandered back home (generally) while converting the ride into a beer ride. hit harland brewing (fantastic mexican lager) off el camino real in the one paseo area of (eastern) del mar and fall brewing in north park much closer to home. super miffy about the saddle rail as the saddle had at least another half year of irregular wtf riding left. haven't gained any weight during riding season but really haven't
lost more than 4-5 lbs after ramping up the riding 40% since the middle of june. the broken rail may be telling me something. grrr.

o-side to finally get the yearly pendleton pass. rolled back along the coast hwy to encinitas. enjoyed an adult bevvie or two then trained it back to sd. 60 miles.

My original planned ride from Mammoth Lakes to Mosquito Flats was cut short due to Highway 395 South being repaved. I started on Crowley Lake Drive and made my way up Rock Creek Road for the first time. This was one of my bucket list rides. I met up with my brother to hike up Little Lakes Valley.

can’t see the route but i know it gets pretty vertical and mosquito flats is the highest paved accessible road in ca. tired just thinking about it. rock creek ain’t no picnic. just another eastern sierra interminable 7-11% donnybrook.

and it’s more of a central california ride but since we’ve been stealing their water for over a century, let’s leave this in the so cal rides. *ducks for cover*

Just a day or so after you, three of us met at Moopark Amtrak station and rode to State Street, Santa Barbara. I think we cracked 1000 feet of climbing but not sure! (especially as Ortega Hill Rd was closed and we used the bypass). Had a great pizza lunch at Rusty's and grabbed the train home for a 62 mile day. Likely traveled the same route as you did.

Rode the Tour of Hacienda Heights-La Habra Heights-Whittier Hills with my Bro. Several riders out enjoying the hills even with our early 0600 start time to beat the heat.

I am sure that you cracked over 1000 feet of climbing; I had 2,250 feet of climbing that day. I don’t do Ortega Hill anymore, especially heading south from Santa Barbara, too crazy during that short stretch of road.

A better climb is Greenwell Avenue. If you are heading north on Via Real, you turn right on Greenwell, (in Summerland) ride it to the top and come down on Ortega Ridge Rd. That climb was featured a couple of years ago, the year of the Montecito mudslides. It is not a long climb but there is a KOM to be had as you crest at Ortega Ridge.
