I have been following this thread because we were thinking of purchasing a newer truing stand. The one we use at the shop was donated in and even though it is quite old, it works fine. We had replaced the Thumb screws about a year ago as some were bent but it is a sturdy stand and reliable with repeatability.

Here is what we are using.

I also have a VAR stand of about that era that I found on E-Bay. Shipping was a bit of a pain because it is HEAVY.



At some point I decided to do a slight mod to increase sensitivity of the HOP. While the bar is on the lateral side, in effect it changes the length of the fulcrum on the radial side.

I like the machine because I can adjust both lateral and radial simultaneously.



It isn't self centering, although if one was doing multiple identical wheels, one could center it for one, then it may be centered for all.

In effect, this works similar to some of the stands with dial indicators. The primary difference is that I can't give a precise measurement of lateral or radial run out.
