Yup, the prototypes were produced on Whidby Island by a guy called Pong, very interesting fellow. I have a set of the protos.

I've been looking for a 'screw badge' Trek for a while, and they were either not my size, too far away, overly expensive, heavily modified/fixie/assaulted by a hipster, etc, you know the drill. I even bought a screw type headbadge to keep on my desk in hopes of finding a bike to go with it one day, a good luck charm perhaps?
Was searching some local classifieds a couple weeks ago, and while looking through the pics, mixed in the pile I spotted......
I contaced the seller, asked if the blue Trek was still available. She said no, it was sold. Oh well, guess one of the local bike flippers saw it and bought it.
Then yesterday I looked at the ad again, and noticed the picture had been changed, and the blue Trek was in it.
Not knowing if that was an older pic, I contacted the seller again, replying with a pic I modified with an arrow pointing out the specific bike I was asking about and she said yes, that one was still available!
She sent this pic, I guess to show me that she still indeed did have it.
We made arrangements to meet today. We were going to meet this afternoon, but I really wanted to secure the bike (to beat any of the local bike flippers who might have seen it), so I got in touch this morning, she said it was ok to meet earlier, took my daughter and headed to the seller's house. She had the bike set out, ready for me to check out. From the ad pics I could not really tell exactly what components it had on it, but I had some idea based on the holes in the hubs. Anyway, I checked out the frame, saw that most of the components are Campagnolo Gran Sport, and despite some surfacy rust on the components, everything looked good and I knew it could be rehabbed. I didn't even haggle on the price, just handed over the cash and happily loaded it in my van.
It's a June 1979 510, Ishiwata 022 frame/fork, Suntour V-GT Luxe rear derailleur, Arius (made in Spain) seatpost (which was not stuck!!!), SR stem, Sakae bars, blue label Super Champion Competition rims, Jim Blackburn rack, Cobra water bottle cage, Rhode Gear flickstand and mirror, everything else is Campagnolo Gran Sport (I think the FD is NR). Underneath all the gunk and dirt, the frame is solid and should clean up well.

Picked up a 1965 Schwinn Racer from Craigslist a few days ago. Pretty good shape, appears to be mostly original, Still has Schwinn branded tires on it. Dry rotted and useless, but will make neat wall hangers. Missing the front brake but I think I found a correct style one on EBay. Pictures are in an album in my profile. I don’t have enough posts to include them here.

Stopped by a thrift shop today and walked away with too many bikes. Looks to be a his & hers pair of 1986 Specialized Rockhoppers (all original), and a 1980 Trek 614 (N serial number), also original except for the Suntour barcons (a smart upgrade, imho). Probably from the same household, and they've been well taken care of and/or seen very little use over the last 40ish years. Love the groupsets on the rockhoppers--full deerhead xt & specialized flag triple cranksets; notsomuch the 614 groupset but we'll see whether they stay with me, get parted out, or get resold as is.
Does anyone here happen to know the BCD on what I'm guessing is a SR Super Apex double crankset on the Trek 614?

Not to mention that the thrift store in question is in Anchorage. That particular bike looks like someone rode it there from Florida, and put it away wet when they got there.. But it has potential.

Definitely a promo, they pop all the time around here in pretty nice shape. Usually with INSANE prices because they're "rare collector's items" LOL but occasionally they're reasonable. Gotta be heavy as hell.....

After a lifetime without tandems, I've come down with two of them this year!
Unlike the Santana, this has been attacked by Cycle Monkeys, including a GOLD paint job that included all the components (then had been mostly removed and repainted blue) and several component swaps that didn't quite work.
I think it's in a better place now, and I scored a ~'93 Burley Duet for 50 bucks!
Several days of cleanup done, and several weeks to go!

Used tandems tend to be cheaper than they should be, IMHO, but even considering that, this is a heck of a deal. The Arai drum brake alone is worth 2.5- 3X your purchase price -- and those look like Sunshine high flange sealed hubs -- super stuff.

Basement Find...again.
Home owners sold the old manse in Cambridge, MA. recently; found while vacating basement a Bianchi Sport SX from 1986-1987, nice red paint, no hacks, chips, 61 cm size men's frame, complete except for wheels. I scooped it for $140. Has Shimano Exage shifting, brakes. I thought Bianchi came with Campagnolo parts? They're made in Italy, yes? I did some on-line research, led me to a Bike forums expose from 2015 about same bike. I will assume that it was built with 700c wheels. Anyone know if it was a 6 or 7 speed wheel? I like the Weinmann or Araya wheels but need to know what it wore from the factory. I sent a photo of same bike. All thoughts welcomed.

$25 ‘88 Trek 1500
Picked this up as a donor for the Schwinn Tempo I bought last week. The Tempo needs a wheelset, and transferring the 600 Tricolor bits over would be an upgrade too. After a quick spin it’s a fun ride with those mustache bars, but I think I will still cannibalize it. Need to find some 600 brifters now as I hate downtube shifters…..

I don’t know on the bars, won’t be able to see that until I unwrap them which may be a little while, have to work through the que. I’ll keep them for a potential project maybe, they’re pretty comfortable.
