A middleweight that piqued my curiosity

Ended up in a Facebook discussion regarding a Miss Fisher's Mysteries convention that's coming to Richmond this July (realized I can't go, what the weekend would cost me could buy me a couple of mint, complete Rossins at eBay asking prices - or refurbish about 1/3rd of my workshop), when an reenactment friend mentioned she had a couple of old bicycles she'd like me to look at. The one is ordinary: a mid-50's AMF Roadmaster paperboy's bike, the kind that some kid got if his parents were unable to afford a Schwinn, but in very well cared for condition. Well worth taking it down to buff out and put back into very nice shape.

The other one has me wondering what the heck it is. Here's a couple of pictures she sent me, from the original Facebook post:

Yes, the fork is bent. Compared to the AMF, this bike definitely seems to be about ten or more years older, the style is definitely archaic for my childhood days. Anyone have any idea of what I'm looking at?

Looks like a 1934 - '36 Elgin lady's bike. Rollfast from same period very similar. Check out thecabe.com, (the classic and antique bicycle exchange) search for thread by member: Harpo. Couldnt upload the pics.

Could be an Emblem Bicycle Co. (Angola, NY) Crank on your lady's bike. Which would possibly make it an Emblem built Elgin. Might be "rare." Maybe some other members with more knowledge will chime in soon.

Does the fork have an extra curve in it?

Probably within what could be repaired.

First- thank you for using “piqued” instead of “peaked.”

Second- I miss Miss Fisher since it’s been off PBS.

sykerocker Bending the fork back might improve the fender line! not to mention an improvement of distance between the fender and the lower down tube.

Tried to [ not too successfully] hop too many curbs?

This could be a fun one to have and clean up/repair.

Do it.

The Miss Fisher movie opens this spring. Promo films are available onYouTube, and have been hitting Facebook in the past month.

The color, light and composition of your photos made me stare quite a bit longer.

Using the proper form of "piqued" + 10 points! Now when you end up straightening that fork, don't lose those points by saying you're clamping something down in a "vice."

Also, that crazy chain guard is worth another +10 points. This project is off to a good start.

I come from the days when diagramming sentences was taught regularly in English class. And I'm a firm believer in the Oxford Comma.

Yes, that chain guard definitely caught my notice. I'm rapidly discovering that I have to do a lot of research regarding the American bicycle manufacturing establishment pre-WWII. I'm running into all sorts of names I'd never heard of before.
