Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Vowels are fine if you hit the right spot, and it turns green. I went with "learn" today. It was so-so. The second one helped more.

Kudos to you, really. I helped my dad do Craftsman style baseboards and door casings at their old house and it's a lot of work but super satisfying.

Also annoying to find out just how un-square many things are

Did the contractor say your house had “good bones?”

I think that’s something they typically say to make you feel better about all the $$$$ you have to sink into it.

No. He didn’t have to say it, but we both know it’s a modest 1930s starter home which had had a lot of substandard work done on it. Problem is it’s worth about 1.1 mil and that’s not a tear-down in this neighborhood…yet.

When we had new insulation put in last year, after the old stuff was vacuumed out and before the new stuff could be blown in, we had to have an electrician check the status of our knob and tube electrical system. He came down and told my wife our house is "very well built".

I asked her whether he had wandered into someone else's attic. It also made me wonder about everyone else's house, that ours should seem so well built!

Wolf's not dead. It just moved south and roams around Oklahoma, North Texas, and Arkansas looking for double wides.

Thanks. I'm not too concerned with actually building the stuff, I'm more concerned about the layout - I'd hate to get to the stage where I build something and I find that the proportions look awkward IRL or hanging the cabinets and discovering that my math was off. I've already found a couple fudge-ups and things that I'm not too fond of while laying it out on the computer, which makes me glad that I'm taking the time to do this on the computer.

Ha . We already had most of the shop equipment bought, so it's just the cost of wood, at this point. While plywood and hardwood prices are a little ridiculous, it'll still be significantly less than the particle board prefab *****.

Eight days and nine nights, in mostly cold weather (40s to 70sF). Two pair of pants or three? A lightweight tour without a lot of walking. A couple ruins, a couple museums, a couple boats.

This.

Clearly they hadn't invented levels, T-squares or plumb bobs yet in 1895.
