1989 Panasonic Team Holland

Hi,

I purchased this frameset a number of years ago on eBay and was hoping to get some more information about it. The plan is to build it up in Dura Ace 7400, which is probably a bit overkill for something with a Tange 1 tubeset.

Here are my questions / observations:
  • Based on the seat binder bolt and looking at the 1988 Panasonic PICS catalog ('89 not available, I can't link to the Panasonic Bike Museum because I'm new) I think this is a Triathlon model as opposed to the Road model that has a different binder bolt location
  • In the catalogue I can see that the same paint scheme is available. However, I didn't see any mention of a Team Holland naming option. Is there a chance someone decided to customize the frame with "TEAM HOLLAND" themselves?
  • Was it common for PICS bikes to not have a PICS decal? Would a shop have ordered a set of PICS bikes and sold them almost as a white labelled option?
  • If anyone has any additional theories or information about this frame it would be greatly appreciated
Pics are below

Hello, what a wonderful frame. I can't answer your question but I will say that the Team Holland won't be overbuilt with Dura Ace.

Beautiful frame! I think DA 7400 would be perfect.

No such thing. That's one of the finest framesets to be had, and deserves the best of everything that money can buy. Once you ride it, you'll see why.

I really can't wait to build it up and for the snow to melt here! I'm thinking of going with blue cables and red bar tape to...really embrace the late 80s/early 90s haha.

Thanks for the kind words.

The late 80s and early 90s were the golden age of hi-end steel road bikes. That's an awesome find.

Agree in a big way! I have slowly started to drift into the late 90s though. Some of the Nivacrom frames have some funky TIG welded greatness to them as well.

Hey,
Great frameset! don't let the Tange tubing name throw you off. That frame is excellent and the ride quality is excellent as well. Putting Dura Ace on this is NOT an overkill.

Enjoy!

Thank you for the positive feedback! I'll give it a go. I had heard that Tange is pretty well respected but I always thought Prestige / Prestige Ultimate and Ultralight were a step above. I think either, way it's going to look and ride great!

Cheers!

Jumping on the bandwagon.

No possible way to overkill here, make it so.

Tange 1 was their top tubing, until Prestige cameout. deserves Dura ace

The Retrogrouch: Classic Tubes: Tange and Ishiwata

Ive been on the marketing side of the bicycle industry from the mid 80s through the 90s. It was easy to hype up and charge more for just slight differences in product. I never bought into it. You'll see. Once you throw some wheels on it you'll love it.

Yeah I was probably over thinking things. Plus I have some DA 7400 waiting to be used so I've started to build it

Makes sense! I worked in advertising for about 10 years so I should have been more thoughtful about what numbers/names actually mean haha (hint: it's larger margins).

Man, that is gorgeous. I love the colors. The blue housing looks great. I would have a hard time deciding between red bar tape and blue bar tape. I would probably keep switching back and forth.

How is the ride?

Thank you! Yes, I was struggling to decide what to do with that. Maybe a seasonal change to blue for the fall haha.

I'll let you know how the ride is soon! It's been a bit chilly and very wet this spring but things are looking better next week.
