Hello, my husbands father passed away when my husband was young from epilepsy. For Christmas this year I’m fixing up his fathers (suspected not confirmed) 1960’s era Western Flyer tricycle as it is a family heirloom and I’m surprised it survived in a broken down shed after a hurricane slammed a tree limb on it. Does anyone know anyone who can help me not only confirm what year this tricycle is, but where I can get vintage parts for it?

There may be folks here who can help you but they will need pictures. If you create an album in your profile , some one could post them for you. You may try The Cabe , which is a different forum. Good luck , sounds like an awesome idea! Joe

Yes, we'd like to see pictures. The forum has a rule that users need at least 10 posts to upload pictures. This is to cut down on spammers. You could post a few more short blurbs to reach 10, or just upload to your picture album in your profile. Another way would be to have your pictures at another site and to post a link to them. Looking forward to seeing them,

Getting a family heirloom operational is a worth while endeavor. Finding details of its manufacture and true age is not that important for a family treasure. Looking forward to some pics when ya can post, and welcome to the forum...

I voted you silly, but at least you're having fun.😁😉 I had a red Western Flyer tricycle, in the early '60s, so had to wish you good luck, with your project. 👍

I voted for thin ice, but at least you didn't open a zombie thread.

Actually, congratulations are in order. I don't think I could create a poll if I tried.

What kind of parts do you need?
I love the restored heirloom idea, but those old trikes really weren't intended to need much in the way of parts, so I'm not sure they ever existed except as being scavenged from other trikes.
And do you want it to be functional - like to give to a grandchild or something? Or just make it pretty for show?

ETA: THIS

I don't know what brand this was... but from my age, I'm guessing it was about 1964.

There are sources for things like pedals and tires, I looked into it once as I have the Garton Delivery Cycle I had as a kid. I gave up the idea of restoring it as it is just too banged up and worn out so I don't recall the vendors names. We use it as a porch decoration now. My Dad saved it from the town dump when I got it, that was in the late 50's. You'd probably be better off to just clean it up and display it but that's just me, I like the aged and weathered look.

OMG, is that the little girl up the street, up the street in your pic? Or is it a boy, trying to confuse us? 🤔😁😉

Short hair like yours in the pic was required, back then, or else. 🙄

Exactly this. Its not like you go to the parts store and say: "I have a 1965 Western Flyer trike and I need pedals for it." Western Flyer was a discount store bike sold at Western Auto stores back in the day. Western Auto will not have parts for it and they did not manufacture the bike. (in. fact, Western Auto is gone now anyway). "Western Auto had several companies manufacture bicycles including Shelby, Cleveland Welding (AMF/Roadmaster), Huffy, Murray and more." The thing about store branded bikes, they were not attached to any single factory. So they could bid out their production and shift from company to company.

Back in the bike boom (late 1960s to 1970s), many department stores, gas stations, auto supply shops, etc., had their own brand of bikes.
Western Auto was sold a few times and eventually was gone.

Head to a local bike shop if you have any questions about various parts. It can take a while to find a shop that understands older bikes. Once you find one, reward them with your business.

I think you need to think find parts that are of the right style.

for finish, clean, polish and a wax (auto store stuff) let the patina be part of the homage and memories

search for radio flyer parts

and bonus points for streamers

post pic when done

The other kid is my little brother - not as cute as me.
I used to go to the town barber - he had a red and white swirly pole and everything. He'd always ask what kind of haircut I wanted and I said "flat-top" because that was the only thing I knew. Then he would give me a Tootsie Pop.

Apologies to your bro, he's just too far away there, for a good guess. 😉
Yep, if you weren't at least 10 or 12, you were either getting a butch or a flat-top. Or the rare & unusual Mohawk, if your parents were "modern" people. That's just the way it was, back then. 🙄😟😉

First I voted silly because I rarely let a poll go by that I don't vote in.

Second, I agree with the others that the restoration or preservation of a family heirloom is worth every penny if you can afford it. Hopefully pictures arrive soon so we can see what you are dealing with.
