Bet you could do it in Lake Wobegon. After all, all the children are above average. 😊

Only had about an hour today so tried to make the most of it. Might pay for it tomorrow.

I got the intent of your post. Yeah, 1 mph is noticeable. My wife and I ride together a lot and we are both data junkies. The first thing out of our mouth at a turn around point or at the end of the ride is average speed. If the speed is up or down for a route we ride a lot, we then talk about wind, traffic lights, which bike we rode, how we felt, good legs/bad legs and etc.

No, not much. Unless there’s an approaching storm, the wind doesn’t affect my average speed.

Man, I need to start riding where you do! What planet do you live on?

60 mile ride with an average 1 mph higher? Sounds like you spent 10 of those miles in a fast pack.

30 years ago, I would average 20 mph up to about 200 km. Now, 15 mph elapsed is about all I do but could do a little better if I tried on shorter rides say 50-60 miles. Rides are around 70' per mile, fairly hilly. Reason for slower average speed? I don't ride hard anymore too often, few actually. And. I used to be 6'4'' and 170 lbs. Now, I am 6'3'' and 215 lbs. There is more traffic and more lights. Elapsed is how I measure. Weight is my biggest factor on short rides.

I did try hard on a hilly 300k this year and did something like 170 PB segments and set my best time ever for that route, around 12:40-45 IIRC, guessing maybe 12:15-20 moving. About 10 years ago in my mid 50's, the first 300k of a flat 600k took me just around 9:20 and just over 10 hours for 200 miles (flat). On almost identical terrain, the first 300k took me closer 11 hours and instead of going straight thru on the 600k, I stopped at 400k at just under 15 hours. I slept until 8 am and finished the last 200k the next day. On longer rides like that, I just get slow somewhere around 350km. Speed drops over a cliff. Age? Insufficient training? Not bonked.

I wonder how average speed on a 28-30lb bike with 26x2.2 tires would compare to a sub 20lb bike with say 700x28 tires? say both had traditional steel frames? ie if a person averaged 16mph for 30 miles on the 28-30lb bike with 26x2.2 tires would they be any faster on a lighter road bike with 700x28 tires? all hypothetical of course I know there are many factors. just wonder if anyone has a stable with similar bikes that they compare like rides on.
