Okay, I get the current trend here. $14,000 bikes are too expensive. $10 water bottles are too expensive.
If you can't afford cycling, quit, sell your bicycling stuff, and sit in a corner and twiddle your thumbs. It's cheap. And twiddling your thumbs just may prevent you from starting really stupid threads.

For a simple water bottle, I use the 24 oz. Gatorade bottle (still have some of the older ones, new ones are thinner). But on a 90+ degree day with high humidity, I will shell out over $10 for a bottle that someone has actually engineered to stay cooler, longer. And if you spread the initial cost over several rides, it isn't that expensive. And having a nice, cool drink on an exhausting ride on a hot day is worth it to me.
BTW-unrelated, but denture tablets are a great way to clean the inside of your water bottle.

Sorry to continue the thread, but:
For the last 20 years or so I've bought 24-oz bottles of Gatorade to use on the bike. Clear, with a twist-open nozzle, fits snugly in a bottle cage. Cost is about $2.50, but you get free Gatorade, or a free bottle, depending on how you look at it.
Earlier versions used plastic that eventually became brittle and cracked, but the current bottles are far more durable. The ones I'm using now have already lasted a few years, with no sign that they'll deteriorate any time soon.
The only problem is that very few convenience stores carry the 24-oz sport bottles these days for some mysterious reason.

I could get bottles from Amazon for under $10 with next day free delivery. If that's not quick enough, I could walk into REI and buy a bottle for $7. The first LBS I checked also has them for $7, and the second has them for $8. With another 15-20 LBS within a 15 mile radius, there are likely several others that sell bottles for under $10.
Like I said in post #2: this thread is pointless.

But I get it... When I returned from SETAF in the 70's I was expecting things to be cheaper then over seas. The exchange rate was terrible in those days. Often we were only getting .25 Marks to the dollar. Of course now they are using Euros. Ta give ya an idea, a German beer could cost you 5 (1970s) USD and then the next day 2 USD. Lets not even talk about Italian Lira. It was a trip. Who knows where we are going now. Each day our money is worth less. But it simply means that we need to increase productivity... And that's another rant...

If they don't have the cheap bottles at the store, you can usually order online and then pick them up at the store without any shipping fees.

Go buy a 500ml bottle of water at the local mini-mart and it fits right into your bottle cage and you can re-use it forever. I have one in my road-bike I used last season and will use it again this year too. Initial investment is usually about $1.

Or even better get to work on a completely different website and forum just about me where you can quench your undying thirst to discuss me. Although I've done the same from time to time, Gatorade, water and pop bottle, and metal, I find it difficult to use a capped bottle while riding. It's a two handed operation and/or risk of dropping the cap out of my mouth. There's a reason bike water bottles are like they are. That said, I can't remember paying $10 for one, because most I have are very old and/or free promotional items.
