UHaul now selling bicycles

UHaul is now selling bicycles. Or, “a” bicycle. I was there to rent a truck and saw this bike on display. The “lightweight” declaration was the most interesting.

Surely they are also offering a trailer to go with that bike.

I can see where someone will say "I know nothing about bicycles. Surely someplace that rents trailers and moving vans knows something about them!"

28 lbs is lightweight...compared to a vintage Schwinn Varsity.

Just a hand truck, if the buyer is lucky the retailer might toss in a dry rotted bungee cord or frayed strap.

Why? For a cheap steel bike 28lbs isn't actually that bad. My wifes' city bike was 38lbs.

My lightweight alloy $1200 road bike is 23lbs, and I don't think you really get much lower than that without spending far more money than most people would even consider spending on a bike.

Dude, U-Haul used to sell/rent *everything*. Vans, trucks, ATVs, campers, snow blowers, hell even VCRs and paint sprayers.

OK... Here is your 250 USD deposit back for your trailer rental...

Or...

How about a brand new light weight bicycle to replace that junker you left next to the dumpster before moving...

I thought the bike was insurance to ride home after the U-Haul's autotranny blows and it is abandoned alongside the highway.
Instant transportation to the next town.

I know the bike snobs here will just bash away on the cheap-o bike, but I see this through the eyes of a retail veteran:
  • U-Haul sells and installs trailer hitches (ostensibly for towing one of their rental trailers)
  • A lot of people have hitches installed (and no trailer wiring) for the express purpose of getting a bike rack, never intending on towing a trailer.
  • Not wanting to loose out on some sales, U-Haul offers a number of hitch-mount bike racks for sale.
  • Having a bike rack displayed makes a lot more sense with a bike on it, so your in-store display setup also includes that State fixie.
    • It's a pain to deal with 'demo models' of product in inventory, so making the bike a saleable item means when the time comes to get it off the floor, you can sell it through your regular sales system.

They sell State bikes at the COOP I haven't been to since covid. They seemed half decent to me at the time.

Should've named the bso an Explorer. Maybe even used a certain tire with a catchy name like "Flyers Tones"

Those abandoned bikes you sometimes see by dumpsters aren't really abandoned. The rider probably just stumbled away after loading up on vodka.

The Varsity, Surly Long Haul Trucker and the Pure gravel bike have plenty more gears than this has. I've got to believe that State bicycle is lighter than 28lbs.

At first I didn't see the brake levers, then I saw that they are using interrupters without the primary brake lever. Clever.

This would have to be an impulse buy because who knew that U-Haul sells bikes. I didn't even know I could get a hitch mount bike rack there. Their plan might be working to let it be known that they have bike racks.

But curiously heavy compared to my mid-80s, bottom-of-the-line, Schwinn Sprint, when it is set up single speed. Weighs about 23 pounds, though that is with alloy rims. I was trying to figure out how they got a FG/SS to weigh that much. The usual answer is steel components.

what is also clever is that they are using the zipties to not only secure the brake cable, but also the marketing flyer.

I had a feeling there’d be responses like this. I’m not surprised at the weight…but that UHaul is selling bikes…but also that they do consider this bike lightweight. Maybe I should have posted this in the Road Bike forum. Just pointing out that, according to their specs, there are Schwinn department store road bikes, priced between $200-$300 WITH components (shifters, derailleurs, freewheel/cassette) that weigh only 28 lbs. This “lightweight” bike has none of those. But hey…if you consider 28.4 pounds “lightweight”…more power to ya.
