I can. It was way back in the cycling renaissance of the 70s. A group of us Central Park regulars decided to do a ride from CP to Bear Mountain. The first time I did it was novel and fun, the camaraderie and all. The second time we did it, by mid-ride I questioned my sanity, thankfully, and I've never even thought of riding long distance again.

I remember when people started subtracting their breaks from the total ride time. WTF? Someone who I knew was slower would claim a time much faster than I had. It took a minute before I found out what they were doing. I always thought if you started @ 8:00 and finished @ 3:00 the ride took 7 hours. You don't get to say you did the ride in 6 hours just because you took 1 hour in breaks.
A local ride called The Solvang Century was my second century, organized or not. It has between 4 and 5k feet of climbing, depending on route variations. The fastest I ever did it was just over 6 hours, including stopping at all the sag stops. I've never been a fast climber so I was happy with that. I don't think I ever tried for a fast time on a century, usually just try to stay with my friends or struggle to the finish alone.
My friend, pizza guy, who I ride with on Tuesdays, used to do a lot of the local double centuries. There is a small group of guys who "race" the doubles. Friend "won" some of them until they started working against him. They figured out he had the best kick at the end so they would work with him until late then they would try and get rid of him for the finish. One time they took off from the last rest while he was in the restroom. He was able to chase most of them down.
He finished a moderately hilly double in 8 hours 53 minutes!.

We just got done with a short, humid, windy tandem ride. My stoker fizzled out on me. She was beginning to suffer on our ride yesterday and made her fatigue official on today's ride. In all fairness, she's been working hard on the bike for quite awhile now, so she was overdue for a collapse.
We had just gotten home when a neighbor told us that she had passed us while we were climbing a hill and was scared for us and presumably for herself as she had to go over in the opposing lane.

Hmmmm... looking at the Garmin FAQs, it seems as if this isn't a selectable light mode so much as an automatic light mode (on both the 510 and 515) when it's detecting movement consistent with being paced by trailing traffic -
One of the other guys in my group also has a 510 Varia, I'll have to pay attention and see if I can tell any differences in the flash behavior. FWIW, though, I've never felt that his light was flashing too brightly for me.
The Varia RTL510 and RTL515 can automatically detect when the rider is in a group ride and a bicycle is being tracked. Group Ride or Peloton Mode is automatically enabled when a slow-trailing bicycle (or other vehicle) is following at a distance closer than 30 m (98.43 ft) and travelling towards the rider at a relative speed slower than 16km/h (10 mph).

I know several people who did those things. One guy I rode with a bit won a 500 mile race once. With those rides sleep deprivation plays a part. Screw that.
