Campy Veloce circa 2000 BB Maintenance

It's been on the bike since 2000, when it was installed new, and has not been serviced at all, and still spins very smoothly and nicely. I do about 600 miles per summer on this bike and that is all for the year. My L.B.S. says "Don't bother." I am not convinced that 20-year-old grease is optimum. In your opinion, should I get in there and inspect, clean and re-grease?
If I wanted to put new bearings in there, are they even available?

That's a cartridge unit, right? If so, your LBS is right. Just ride it til it's no longer smooth and then replace it. Might be good to look for one now. If it's a cartridge bb unit you can't service the bearings in any meaningful way.

Let sleeping dogs lay... I agree with starting the looking for replacement now. Campy tapers are slightly different from the vastly more common JIS one. Once a replacement is in hand the most I would do ro thr current one is to remove and reinstall. This will best let you check general condition as well as there's no other issues (corroded in place, frame stuff you can better access from the shell). When the current BB is out you can decide to see if you can pull the cartridge bearing seals and inject more grease, or not. With a replacement on hand you can't do anything "wrong" to the current BB that would keep you from tiding. BTW which bike? Andy

Any leads on where to look for that type of cartridge bearing?

It's on the Technium, which is my long-distance solo artist.

Yes, which I am just finding out. I had assumed that it was ball-type bearings.

Thanks. That saves me $12.00 on the installation tool.

Undoubtedly the Campy BB does use balls, as most all do. But a cartridge BB usually has those balls in a bearing having the inner, outer races and balls assembled as a unit in a factory. These cartridge bearings often have a "rubber like" seal on one or both sides that can be pried off to expose the internals for service.

My earlier post suggested that these seals might be assessable and thus the bearing refreshed with grease. I do not suggest that the cartridge bearing be removed from the BB. Andy
