What year is my Peugeot Record du Monde w/Reynolds 531 frame/Peugeot derailleur?
I found this bike at a local thrift store & paid- to me - a lot for it ($149.99), but I knew the Reynolds 531 frame was a good one (it is surprisingly light to pick up!) and I've never seen a Peugeot derailleur (it has a S mark on the top of it - could it be in conjunction with Simplex or Suntour?) + it was dirty but in good shape with no bends, breaks or rust & even the tires looked new - so I figured it was old/older & worth the $150 gamble! Was I right??
Trying to find out about it I read that Record du Monde is on a lot of their bikes and it might even be a PK10?
Can anyone tell me what I have and/or what year it is?
Was it a good deal?
Thanks for any information.

You got a solid deal on this bike. It is a 1980s PXN 10. The catalogs are online which may help you pinpoint the year. It has a full Reynolds frame and many of the parts look original (brakes and levers, and derailleurs). I doubt those rims are original but the rear hub might be. The crank is not.
This is a quality bike. I have a 1982 PXN 10 and it is one of the nicer riding bikes I own. But I'm partial to Peugeots.

You got a screaming good deal on an early to mid-80s Peugeot Super Competition. The Maillard 700 hubs are OEM as is the Simplex seatost, Mafac levers and Weinmann 605 brake calipers and Ideale saddle. The original crankset might have been a Stronglight 104 bis or a 106. They are great bikes, quick handling and that frameset was near the top of the line only exceeded by the PY 10.

Great find! I found a Super competition just like it last spring for the same price you did. Mine came with a bunch of early Shimano 600EX components but it’s the same exact frame. If you post a serial number we can give you the exact year if you’re interested, otherwise it’s from 1980-82.

Yes, the "Peugeot" branded derailleur is made by Simplex, as also is your front derailleur.

Thank you all!
I looked underneath & saw the serial number but it was partially covered by a cable - my phone couldn't get a clear photo, but I know it was a number followed by what looked like the letter J - and the last two was either 80 or 90. I will get a good photo over weekend.
Thanks again for all the help - I thought it was good when I saw the Reynolds 531 & when I felt how light it was, but I didn't think it was this good!
I appreciate all your help.

I just purchased this bike from miamibeachcg and await its arrival! I’ve done a bunch of reading on this forum but just now decided to jump in. I’ll share more info on the bike when I get it.

Work in Progress
I thought y’all might enjoy this photo of the bike from the original post. I’ve got a donor bike with the time period correct crankset on the way. All together, I’m very pleased with this purchase. I still don’t understand why someone repainted the top bar over the “Super Competition” sticker. But whoever did it did a great job and was pretty good at their trade. I’m guessing it was done because the top bar was scratched and it was before this bike was really considered vintage. Has anyone seen one of these seatposts with red paint in indentations? It’s obviously factory but I don’t know why? The freewheel is a 13-18 corncob with red between the two biggest cogs.
Could this have been a special built bike? Maybe this is a 1982 CFX frame? The stem had 12 80 stamped and the second digit of the frame number is 0. From the brochures it looks like 1982 was the first year for the Delrin cable guide underneath the BB. Additionally, the USA brochure doesn’t list a 56 cm frame option for the 1980 to 1982 PXN10, only the special purchase CFX frames were sold in that size.
Would there be any way to differentiate between the two frames?

S/N 9103143 = 1979 vintage, right? 7 digits = 1970s, leading digit = year (see signature for my 1970 UO-8, below).
(My 1980 PKN-10 S/N started B0 ... I don't recall the rest offhand -- I'll have to ask my son, since it is his now.)
Since yours has a letter near the front of the S/N, I suspect early 1980s, as well.

Thanks! Now I’m rethinking my build all together. I was just going for a “get it on road” quick maintenance restoration but now I’m going as original as possible. That means I gotta get a Stronglight 106 crank. I have a parts bike on the way with a 104 bis but this is turning out too pretty to muck up with a lower level crank, I think?

I was fortunate enough to own a '79 PXN 10 in a size that fit my body perfectly. It was among the finest riding bikes that I've ever had the pleasure to experience, and I've had a few very nice bikes to compare it to. And one of the prettiest as well.
In my opinion, these bikes deserve to be restored to spec, or else any component swapping should only include era correct, top of the line substitutes.
Enjoy!

I think I've got one of these, been wondering about it for a while. It has the forward-facing breathe holes in the seat stays, which seem such a distinguishing mark.
I don't know any other frames with breathe holes that face to the front.
Mine's in much poorer condition. Here's a picture of the frame number.
