Davidson decals

If anyone is in need now or in the future, please keep me in mind. I spent all of Thursday at Elliott Bay Bicycles with Bob doing general clean-up with him in preparation for turning over the keys to the building owner. Today the business officially closed

Anyhow, Bob passed along a crapload of Davidson decals - they were going to get tossed anyway. Most of the vintage waterslide types are white with black outlining, and most if not all of the headtube decals are yellow with black outlining. There are a lot of newer-style decals (head tube/seat bands), some 25th Anniversary decals, older model name decals (Challenge, Impulse and Discovery) and if you're lucky enough to have one of Bill's early tandems, I have a ton of Discovery downtube decals (in yellow with black outline), too.

I'll post some pics here before the weekend is over. Btw, no charge on any of the decals - you only pay shipping

That really is sad news. Truly one of the neatest bike stores on the planet. I had my Bertin refinished there a few years ago. Wonderful folks to work with.

I work for the airlines, and years ago happened upon Elliot Bay Bicycles by accident while wondering around Seattle on a layover. After that, every time I was in town I would stop by and spend a few hours hanging out. It was always fun to see what Bob's latest vintage acquisition might be, or what custom frames were being built in the back. Such nice people. I feel as if an old friend has passed.

The EBB website says that custom frame building will continue at a new location. Any idea where that will be? Will Bill & Bob still be involved, or will they be Davidson's in name only?

Nice to hear from you, Dude. Been wondering what you've been up to.
A good save on the decals. Someone will need them, some day.

So, outside of decals did you find any cool little gems hidden in the back? 30 years in that same location, I know there had to be some neat stuff? Did Bob take it all with him? I sure would have enjoyed digging around there for a day or two.

Dude, great work!
When I found they were closing I got in gear on getting my 1990 Davidson Impulse repainted by Gilmour in Tucson. After 5 frustrating calls the last two weeks they were open (I know some of the staff was worried about their future) and never receiving the requested email photos on the last day they were open I told a pleasant sounding lady to just send what she thought would best work for me. $50 later I got somewhat over sized decals (maybe for OS tubes?) in my second choice for color. If you have a yellow with black outline down and set tube, impulse decal and the old style HT badge, just a "D", I would forever be in your debt.

Bill and Bob have gone separate ways, and as of Thursday, Bill had yet to find a new location for the framebuilding side of the business.

Completely agree with your take on visiting/spending a couple hours hanging around. Used to do that a lot, myself

There might be one set of the older one as in your pics. I'm still sorting through them, so I'll let you know.

One thing I am noticing is that the colors are limited. I have a TON of late 70s/early 80s down and seat tube decals, but they are ALL white with black outlines. Just my luck mine are yellow with black outline! So far, I haven't found any I myself could use in the future - sorta ironic, huh?

Thanks, man

You know, there are even modern ones that are masks - you end up with painted logos with them. I wonder, if Bill doesn't begin the framebuilding again, if people would want those one day, too?

As for what I've been up to, well...I've just been kinda doing my own thing for a little while as the weather moves away from cycling for me. Getting some indoors stuff done. Trying not to tie myself down to the computer. Doing a little transitional-training. The first six months of retirement has been interesting to say the least How're you doing?

No. By the time I got down there to help with the final clean-up, all that stuff was gone. I know some went to local co-ops - even some framebuilding stuff (BB shells, lugs, tubing) was set aside for that. I'm sure I could've gotten a lugset with a BB shell if I'd asked, but for some reason I didn't really feel the need. Mark, the master mechanic, did let me take a nice Hugi spoke wrench, tho!

Easy, if you post a pic of the bike (before the repaint) here, I'll compare the decals and let you know. Davidson had at least 5 different versions of headtube decals that I know of, so I'll need a little more to go on. If I've got it, I'd like to get you exactly what you need.

Terrible picture, sorry, bike is in the back but it is all I can find and it's now painted waiting for decals so this is it. The PO had it painted and the painter put on vinyl decals that were close to Bill's without the black outline and the Impulse decal. PO said was on the bike was close.
Thanks for the effort, much appreciated.

I'm sorry, but I no longer have them. Somehow they contrived to get all stuck together two summers back and I had to toss 'em out. Not a one could be saved

What timing. I have two Davidson's (late 80's) I need to paint this winter, looks like a trip to Freemont is in my future, assuming they sell decal kits.

I stopped by a couple times, finally getting a chance to meet up with Bill a couple weeks ago. It's a bit of a trip for me, since I'm coming down from Everett. Unfortunately, Bill doesn't have any (usable) decals. What he does have are some templates, though he'll need time to wander through his box and find them. But...

He gently expressed some concern about the quality of replacement paint, pointing out the challenges of painting a bicycle frame, and stressing that an autobody shop is unlikely to do it properly. We probably chatted for an hour, I didn't engage in a "my guy knows how to do it" debate, since there was no point. Bill is a heck of a nice guy, with understandable concerns, since it is his name/reputation, even on sold bikes.

I didn't have time to go back last week, hopefully I will this Wednesday or Thursday, and he'll have/take the time to provide the templates I need. Really, all I need is the signature, I can make the other templates myself without too much trouble. (My body shop has a decal/template maker.)

Cheers,
John

Finally got back into the shop and caught Bill at a good time. He dug though a box of stickers and found templates for my Impulse. $50. We chatted for a while, I left wanting to abandon the idea of painting, and buy a new Davidson. 8-)

I have what appears to be an early 90’s Davison, chrome fork, C-Record headset that was repainted but has no decals. I called Bill years ago about getting some but nothing happened. Any ideas? I’ve had it in storage for years. Now would like to build it up.

Hi Mark, I am not sure how soon the Drillium Dude will get back to you. He more or less left the forum about a year ago. He will probably get a message from someone. He was local to me but now is in Arizona I believe.
