It's possible. You could hit a bump, jump, drop, whatever the wrong way and jar your thumb. Might not notice it until later. Mine never bothered me from just riding, but guess it could happen if the bars didn't have enough sweep and constantly were trying to push your thumbs back.

This only happens on mountain bikes that sell for $299.99 or less.

So you are fine.

Sounds like thumb arthritis. I have it. Not a lot you can do about it.

Definitely. Repeated mechanical problems that force you to sit on the side of the road, thumbing for a ride will strain that area.

Shouldn't this thread be moved to "Pills and Ills"?

More likely from using the remote control for the TV so often. Try switching hands!

Thumbs are one of the biggest wastes of money in biking, but despite that it is possible to make them hurt if one is riding JUST beyond one's comfort zone, during one's preferred time of day, and striving for that elusive but gratifying, euphoric "money shot".

It's not from biking, it's from keyboard overuse. Try not posting for a month and see if it gets better

CMC to MC Joint instability. It could be from the bars but you can injure these joints just from straining the tendons and muscles doing regular routines. I messed up my CMC-MC joints recently just putting on my tire after fixing a flat. Using a hard plastic splint for few days will help allot. If not then go get some small steroid injections into the joints. Thumb steroids injections can be defective for over a year if you don't reinjure them. Unlike knees!

I always got the feeling his posts were typed using one index finger in a hunt and peck fashion.
