From everything I've read when you buy pride-of-China bike jerseys on Amazon you need to order at least one size up. Their sizes run small and sometimes there's no standard sizing, so a large in one brand might be a medium in another.

BTW, that's why I thought people's answers should be limited to only things they had actually bought themselves.

I think it's fun to talk about different attitudes towards these things. It's not fun to argue about whose opinions are better or who's the real cyclist (and I see both snobs and reverse snobs doing that bit all the time).

I bike all year...on average around 5k miles every year. I road bike, mountain bike and fat bike in the winter. My cut off temp in the winter is around 10 degrees. I also compete in mountain bike races, gravel races and winter fat bike races where I'm on the bike from anywhere from 3 hours to 7 hours. My Jersey's from Amazon have not given me any problems on any of the races or rides that have been a long duration.

This was my last mountain bike race on July. 6 hour race and I took 4th place. Maybe I could have have taken 1st or 2nd if I was wearing a more expensive jersey.

While the torso was too long and the belly too roomy, the chest was appropriately sized for a Club Fit jersey and the shoulders too tight; sizing down wouldn't have worked.

Interesting enough, if I ordered the banded jersey brand that some on the board swear by, the basic Core jersey, their sizing guide recommends an XL. The L will be too small in the chest and I won't be able to get the zipper completely zipped. The XL might fit the chest/hips, but the waist is about 4-5 inches too big, just like the cheap one WhyFi tried on. I'm 5'8", that thing's going to bottom out about mid glute.(just like the others do) Can you say tunic?

It depends on the brand. Some have matched my U.S. sizing and others I've had to size up and others I have sized down. Recently purchased 2 pairs of Arsuxeo mountain bike shorts and I had to size down to a medium. Normally would be a large in the U.S.

Just for fun I tried on my Arsuxeo jersey this morning just to double check. I do not have the issue in the belly area like you did. Might be because of my build. I'm 5'8" and 185 lbs, but not long in the torso. My Arsuxeo jersey is XL.

I also remembered I have one of their winter cycling jackets (also XL) which fits me well.

I don't have a problem with different opinions or attitudes, and I'm not afraid to have my opinion challenged. Sometimes I learn something new that changes my position. Sometimes I further solidify my own position on a topic. My issue is when others try to tell me what my opinion should be (i.e., snob or reverse-snob), especially when that judgement is based on misguided principles or zero/minimal experience.

Clothes will always be the subject of too expensive versus too cheap. The spectrum is too broad.

My daughter is getting married in a couple of months. I decided to buy a tux rather than rent one which will cost me about 5 to 6 times the price of the rental. But, I want to be comfortable, have a good fit, and look my best for the event. To some, that's a waste of money, but to me it's money well spent.

Same applies to cycling garments as well as other clothing.

They definitely go faster when properly cleaned and waxed. But, you have to use a good wax, not that cheap Turle Wax.

My first really long (200 km+) ride in a poorly fitted (very slightly bigger - not the comedy gold fit of the bike jersey shaped object) cycling jersey ended up with sore nipples. That got promptly relegated to short rides only. It wasn't even bad quality (although, it wasn't particularly good for the price, either) it just didn't fit well. Could call it a waste of money, because it is mostly languishing in my closet. I should gift it away. Life is too short for ill fitting kit. These days I'm almost exclusively in one piece roadsuits / trisuits, anyway.

Here's an unconventional one which I personally found to be a waste, for me - a rear rack with bags. For the kind of (light) commuting that I sometimes do, I find a backpack to be ideal, and I use the same backpack to carry my computer and paperwork when I'm travelling by car. When I can do some touring on the bike I'll probably want to revisit that, but for the forseeable future it isn't happening. Don't buy stuff you aren't going to really use?

Then the outright mistakes. The most recent one was buying disc brake pads without checking if they were compatible because they looked similar. Ooops.

If I get a good amount of use out of something and it doesn't disappoint, I don't consider it a waste of money, even if it was expensive.

I have no idea what $1000 driving shoes look like, feel like, or smell like, but I saw a picture of driving shoes once, and I'm sure these are totally exactly the same.
