"Raleigh" hubs - who made 'em?

I just got a nice-ish ally hub, has a red label around the barrel. Says Raleigh, who really made it?

If it's any help the net has this pic of the same label, different hub (who made that...):

I'm gonna guess it's Taiwan-era parts, which were typically near-copies of Japanese or Atom hubs.

Looks like good quality, and even cheap Taiwan hubs usually have quite good bearings in them, either loose ball or cartridge.

Those were on the mid 80's Raleigh USA bikes. There is an actual rubber seal. When I redid my 84 GP I went to the bearing house and had them match up a seal. The originals were actually labeled Raleigh on the seal.

I was expecting to see the aluminum flanged 3 piece steel hubs that appeared on some early 1970's Raleigh Records.
very cool, phone dial type holes in the flanges.

I automatically thought Suntour. Suntour made those Raleigh stamped derailleurs at that time

If you meant these ones, they are Sturmey:

(And nine holes, not ten.)

I always wondered who built these too. I’ve rebuilt two sets and am just not a fan. Used new bearings and never could get them to roll as smooth and buttery as other hubs.

I was thinking of the Raleigh-branded hubs on the Japanese Super Grand Prix.

MAEDA not a manufacturer of hubs

the hubs which bear their name produced by Sansin Matsumoto (Sunshine) as the two firms were part of the same keiretsu (trade group)

Was Joytech a part of Sansin or a part of that trade group- or just another company?

I looked at the 1977 Raleigh UK catalog and the Super Grand Prix came with Atom hubs and the Grand Prix had Normandy hubs. I originally guessed Suntour based on the FD and RD on my last Super GP but Juvela said Suntour didn't make hubs and he'd know.

Thanks. My '84 had one Sunshine and one odd looking and quite ugly Shimano skewer when I go it. I presumed the Sunshine was original to the bike and sourced another one so they would match. I didn't know if the skewers were a good indicator of who made the hubs or not but thought it a safe bet.

I need to dig the Shimano skewer out and post it. It just looks so inelegant I've wondered what it was from.

MAEDA's other partners included Sugino for chainsets, DiaCompe for brakes and KKT for pedals

Whomever made them went so far as to brand the seals "Raleigh" on the hubs and Bottom bracket cups
