Polishing Suggestions

Hi,
Looking for tried and true methods for removing light scratching in chrome. Also any suggestions on how to also remove swirls in frame paint. I've tried different auto waxes but it only hides them. I'm afraid to burn through the clear coat with anything more abrasive and haven't tested. Please let me know.
Thanks!
Matt

I have a chrome 1987 Diamondback Ascent. I use Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish. Makes it shine like a new dime but doesn't really polish out anything but minor scratches. For paint, I like Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl Remover. Meguiars has a similar product that also works great. Those products are mildly abrasive so don't overdo it. Again, there is probably nothing available over the counter that will deal with deep scratches in either paint or chrome.

I don't know about paint on a bike, but I've used Turtle Wax Polishing Compound on a few guitars with great results. Also, slightly abrasive.

Scratches in Chrome can't be removed easily. My plating shop said it is best to use a paste wax on the chrome to protect it, but it is not foolproof. Swirls in paint can be treated with Meguiar's Mirro-Glaze. We used it in the GM body shop to seal freshly painted lacquer finishes. Apply it full strength wet and polish until dry and shiny. It adds a second coat of sealant to the paint. HTH, Smiles, MH

Scratches CANNOT be removed unless you polish the surrounding area down to the depth of the scratch. That means removing material.

I believe the automotive refinishing people have clear top coats that can be manually applied that will infill and hide scratches and swirls in paint.

Try a lubricant or chrome polish of your choice and use aluminum foil wadded up into balls. This is typically used to remove rust but it's certainly not going to hurt the chrome.

Thanks for all the input! Looks like I'm heading to the auto parts store.
Cheers!
