Super Sport surprise.
Picked up this Super Sport today, mainly because it was cheap and also for the 600 group. It was missing handlebars and the stem, bad tires and paint overspray on the frame. I wasn’t expecting much from it, but it cleaned up nice. New tires, cables bar tape, Cinelli bars and stem and a Turbo saddle brought it all together. But what surprised me was the ride. Nice enough that I’m leaving it as is and keeping it.

I have that frame in 25" purchased from a BF member. Last Fall I snagged a complete 23 inch '87 with rusty frame for the 600 group. I need to get things switched over!

THat was actually going to be my question... also, did any other marquee use Tenax or was that exclusive to Schwinn?

The Tenax was the tube-set made during the middle '80, those were actually the 3 main tubes, made like the cromor tubes in seamed 25CrMo4, and double butted.
Good result in term of stiffness but was not one of the light tubeset line.

Between the description of Tenax as Cromor on the Nova website and this definitive reply from Columbus, it's pretty clear "Tenax" is 25 CrMo 4 seamed, double-butted chromoly similar to Cromor for the three main frame tubes. Because of the 26.6mm seatposts used on Tenax frames, it's also a pretty good guess that the seat tube is straight gauge with 0.9mm walls.

Must be that time of year as a few weeks or months ago I picked up an '87 Schwinn Super Sport, cleverly disguised and absent any obvious identifications, for the indexed 600 group and, well, it fits and rides so fine that plan epically failed.
On the upside, I do now have a SS from the 1960s, the 1070s and the 1980s, so there is that?)

That's what I though since I have never seen any other bike with it, and it seems to cross over with Cromor/Aelle/Matrix and Gara maybe?
So if Tenax is Cromor-light, that is a pretty darn good set of tubes.

Yes, the SS was higher in the model line, but came with a different Tange fork.
Have owned a dozen examples of both the Tempo and SS over the years, and my personal preference is for the rider qualities of the Tempo.
Latest (and likely the last) one should be arriving from the painter- Franklin Frames- any day now.
As a side note, the 89 Tempo's like Top's came with 7 speed Shimano 105 and an upgraded seatpost, stem and handlebars. Not sure if Tenax SL is actually a different set of tubing, but they are nicely appointed bikes.
