Did you ride with that COM (century-a-month) group back then? I remember there being one rider who would add miles if our route came up short, even if only by 1 mile. He demanded 100.00 miles minimum!

This site has become so inhospitable. When certain people see a thread that doesn’t interest them, they write trolling comments rather than just ignoring it.

The Bike Forum group? No, I rode with some of the people but I didn't participate in the COM. In my early days with the SFVBC we did the "century" every week, even though they didn't always come out to 100. I haven't done a 100 mile ride since 2019.

The demanding rider, anybody I know? I think I can guess.

Is it really "trolling" comments when the OP is themselves deeply involved with the same thing?
I mean the whole idea of a thread like this is to cause chaos and spew nonsense so if people can't have fun and post in the same vain what is the point?

Since 2010 for me. Don't recall his name, but he was former military and rode a very small frame. That's about all I can remember. But yeah, Mary, Vic, Oleg... that was the bunch.

Newbie here riding my first century Saturday, and my first group ride. It's a "no drop ride" and my question is, can I stay on the "hoodies" for 100 miles, or would everyone be more comfortable if I swapped out for my flat bar, since I'm a new guy?

Huh? I can't tell if you're making a "no drop bar" joke, but ride the bike you're most comfortable with. Most distance riders prefer drop bars because they're easier on the hands.

I've definitely been known to ride the bike around the block a few times at the end of the ride rather than having a 99.something miles ride. The neighbors give me some funny looks.

Never mind that! I'm more worried about what bodily functions are allowed in Gas City, IN.

I seem to remember a thread where someone joked about a 7.7 mile ride being a "half of a quarter of a metric century."

We're probably thinking of the same guy.

Mary used to organize some really fun rides, haven't seen her in a few years. I used to see her occasionally after those pricks drove her away from BF.

I still see Oleg once in a while, He moved to Ohio for a while. I saw him mountain biking at the Hub one time. Here is an old pic of him on May Canyon.

Better yet, wear a hoody and ride your flat bar and you will have all your bases covered.

Like was said above, ride the bike you are the most comfortable on because after 70 miles, you will need it. Good luck and good for you.

From his profile, his flat bar appears to be a single speed, so I'm guessing he's likely to need more than one gear to get through his first century. Maybe not, though because he appears to be in Florida, so not necessarily any hills.

So the OP's question is really "what qualifies as a solo century?" Since this is really asking us how we label our own rides, this subject is therefore completely subjective, which means that arguing (asserting I'm right, you're wrong) is going to be pointless and dull. I do think there's an interesting discussion possible about how we label our own rides and why.

For me, it's pretty simple. The halfway stop is a reward to myself that helps motivate me to ride that day. Calling the ride a century no matter where and how long I take my breaks motivates me to put in a few more miles than I would if I didn't call the 100 miles a century. Unless you're in training for something specific, I seriously doubt it makes much of a fitness difference if you do the endurance ride in 4 25 mile segments in the same day vs. taking a few short breaks during a continuous 100 mile ride, all other things being equal. You can ride either one with more or less intensity than the other, do some of you define the "solo century" to motivate yourself to more intensity?

This might describe me. I'm just thinking that if I ride 100 miles in one outing, that's a century, even if I stop a few times along the way. I am motivated to do 100 miles because a century seems like an accomplishment in the same way that running the 26 miles to do a marathon is an accomplishment.

Id say so yeah, if a century isn't like a marathon in that it isn't a race then its more like "everesting" the climbing challenge, which has to be done in under 24 hours and you can take breaks

Somebody rides 25 miles on Monday, then another 25 miles on Wednesday, then another 25 miles 0n Friday and then another 25 miles on Sunday and then claims to have ridden a 100 mile century that week ? ...I don't think so, it just doesn't work that way.
