You could buy some metal & rubber and try designing and building your own bike.

Two tips- use your spell check and punctuation. It shows respect for the readers of your post. Swing by a bike shop, see what's available. A $500 bike may be just fine for your purposes.

Why don't you describe your training in economics or business, if any?

More expensive bikes are much lighter. So you actually get less raw materials for your money.

Bikes are expensive because they are worth it.

New to BF. Based on your troll post, the difference is just $1500. And, please use spell check and punctuation, thanks.

More likely a sock puppet.

Definitely a weak attempt at trolling.

I think it's a product of the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality we see nowadays.

Melt down all those "trophies" and you can make a bike out of them. Maybe.

Lighter, better quality components last longer and ride better. What kind of bike are you thinking of getting? Road, mountain bike, hybrid? What’s your budget?

You think bikes are expensive, you should check out watch collecting. Most enthusiasts don't consider a particular watch to be "expensive" till around the $10,000 range. To many in the community, a $5,000 watch is a nice starter piece. There are production watches out there that cost more than your house. Cycling is a relatively inexpensive hobby for a true enthusiast. Most people have been accustomed to purchasing their watch or bike at Walmart, so anything that is significantly more expensive than a Timex or a Schwinn is considered extravagant to the general public.

Bikes are only expensive if you’re relatively poor.

For the record, I find bikes can be expensive, but I love cycling and I love cool bikes, so I buy the best, most interesting bikes I can afford.

lol You've reached your 5 post limit for today, lol, but I will leave this for you when you start up again bright and early...

I don't believe you are genuine, and your approach is bush league and thus boring, so welcome to my ignore list. lol

I'm actually fairly impressed with how capable even "basic" bikes can be, for the price they're able to sell for.

Back in the day, '86 or '87, I had to think hard about purchasing a Ritchey Ultra MTB. Fast-forward to today, and even at the ~$1100 price tag (vintage dollars) it's impressive how much was put into that bike, for the money. Anymore, a decent $2000 bike seems to have roughly that amount of capability and value, IMO.

As for "professional" grade bikes, I've no idea. Fairly unfamiliar with them. But I'd expect the basic "math" to be much the same. There's a lot of technical and engineering prowess that goes into making something so functional, smooth, durable and lightweight, which can also last for years. A price of $15K surprises the hell out of me, "professional" grade or not. But, still, there are a lot of $5K bikes that have far more tech and function in them than I could use in two lifetimes. Got to wonder, though, how much more smoothness, stiffness, bomb-proof functionality and reliability can be squeezed out of different parts of a "serious" bike. I'd think that most of the big gains have long since been achieved.

Most of us probably don't need professional bikes.

But if you do.... Maybe contact some of the TdeF teams and ask if they ever sell off their old bikes after the season is over. Maybe they even have some lightly-damaged ones from that big crash they had! I smell a bargain.

Haha! Yeah, I had to get out of that hobby! I’ve actually sold watches to buy bikes. At one point, I was trying to support vintage sports cars, watches, and cycling; talk about overreach! I’m really down to just indulging the bike hobby, which is a good thing. Been thinking about boats lately, though…
